Buffering with High Res files? RESOLVED!
« on: July 06, 2012, 10:05:59 pm »

First time i ever noticed this....playing flacs in win7 wsapi event mode etc...normal flacs are ok, but 96/24bit files start playing then at around 28 seconds they stop and JRiver goes into Bufferring for a long time and then starts playing where it stopped??

I am using the latest 17 version...

Played with buffering settings all over the place...from high to low, tried to play from disk etc...really wierd.

Using a HRT Music Streamer ii +, playing normal files for a long time never noticed this issue?

Tried using external USB hub and different connections etc...

Where to start figuring out how to be able to play normal 16/44.1 and 24/96 high res files without this loooooong buffering issue?

Note: The high res files are from HD Tracks.

Thanks
Alex

What are your settings in DSP Studio > Output Format?

What score does the machine get if you use Help > Benchmark?

Thanks.

Matt,
Its 5:30 am here on the east coast going for a 6 mile run....I will run the benchmark later and report...I have a second system thats running this dac with an external amp just fine with the 96/24's with no bufferring occuring at the 28 second mark etc...so I will run the bench's on both systems and check all the settings etc...then play again with the USB connection on the errant system!!

Thanks for your offer to help!!

I dont want to go to another media player etc...

I like the JRiver theater view "alot'!

ok the system that works ok with 96/24 flacs in WASAPI Event Style benchmarks are:

=== Running Benchmarks (please do not interrupt) ===

The HTPC that is having the buffering issue with the same 96/24 flacs bench is:

=== Running Benchmarks (please do not interrupt) ===

Running 'Math' benchmark...

JRMark (version 17.0.180): 1958

On the trouble system I uninstalled and went back to the last stable version.
It also has the buffering with the .165 version as well.

I made sure all the settings in the DSP and Output settings were identical.

On the HTPC slower system I tried direct sound and still get the buffering when i play a song at the 28-30 sec ond time....then after about a minute it starts playing..and doesnt seem to have any more bufferng...if i stop the song and restart it the same 28-30 seconds then buffering for a minute or 2 then it starts playing...wierd..

On the same system I have 70 HD movies that play well in HD sound via HDMI to a receiver with no issues or stumbling etc...really works well the only thing here was to set the buffering setting to 25ms to get rid of some pops/tics..so the pc seems to have the power to do this...but again here we are not using USB and the external DAC.

I also updated the firmware in the DAC.

Hope you had a good run.  I just finished my morning run too, although I certainly didn't do six miles!

Those are both fast machines.  So I don't think it's a CPU issue.

Instead, I would guess it's a file I/O issue.  Maybe wherever the files are coming from isn't quite fast enough (wifi, LAN, etc.)?

You could copy a file to the C:\ drive and play it as a test.

Let us know what you find.

Hey Matt, 6 miles!! and i am 63 yrs young!! did a half marathon in march 1hr 55 min....used to be a lot faster but time has taken its toll!! lol..

Well sir I have these files on the C: \ drive, which is a solid state drive, its fast, the system boots in 12-15 seconds..to the WIN7 64 bit Pro desktop..so not Lan or wireless to the pc its all on the local primary boot SSD drive.

Thats whats puzzling here...

I noticed that any of the 96/24 flacs will start...bit perfect etc...and then at the 30 sec mark the buffering starts and again it starts to ply in 45 sec to 1 minute then if it plays long enoungh a few more mintues it sometimes goes back into bufferring...

I agree its something to do with file access or I/O...but for the life of me I am lost at this time ....and I am a pc "expert' been working at IBM PC CO for 20+ yrs in development...now Lenovo. So I will try to get some expert opinions on monday at work as well....there has to be a setting or issue with this system etc maybe with the BIOS for the ASUS board that this is etc...

Are there any i/o buffer internals in JRiver that might be needed to be tweaked ?

I have a 96/24 wav file that plays fine....but the flac one has the buffering issue on the HTPC?
Just another piece of the puzzle...is it something to do with the decoding of high res flacs with JRiver or with the DAC on this system?

RESOLVED.

Corrupt files....converted one of the 96/24 to wav...noticed that at 28-30 seconds there was a skip or jump in the song....hmmm

Light went on....why not try the high res files from the pc that works...

Copied to USB key.

Played from USB key flawlessly!!

Seems like the files in the new PC were corrupted in the mass copy I did months ago...just never played these high res files on this system...

Gosh aint life wonderful..
