How to migrate my library files to a different drive?
« on: September 08, 2012, 02:19:30 pm »

Can you tell me to how to most easily migrate my library and library files to a different drive?  I need to go bigger and I'm also considering putting them on a Synology server.  Thanks in advance for your help.  sskings

Right click on all media within MC, and choose the Rename, Move and Copy tool. There you can move all "physical" files on the disk. You could switch just the drive letter from D to E, and it will automatically move it all and update tags accordingly. Just remember to check carefully the output of the text box on the right hand side. And try it on a few files to start with so you don't mess something up :D

The wiki has a topic on "Moving Files".

OK....I asked the wrong question.

What I really want to do is reconstruct my current library on the new disk.  Here's the situation....I've been using this disk as a backup, so the files already exist on the disk.  I've got a custom field that designates my backup BD-R disk and I've got the views that I use.  How do I migrate this customized information best to the new library on the new disk?

Thanks again for the help.

The File location tag can be changed, this would be easy if it was just a few root folders to change on a lot of files. If your folder/file structure was the same you could just select all your files, change the location tag From d:\......\.. to Z:\......\.. .

Interesting idea...

I don't see a Location tag.  Only tags that have unique paths to each file.  There is a Volume tag but it is not editable.  Where am I going wrong?

Thanks.  sskings

Change either [Filename] or [Filename (path)].

Yes.  but can I do that on 5000 files simultaneously?  I'll need to change the Filename of every file in my library at once to implement as outlined above.....correct?

Yes, you're just changing the path field in the database using Find & Replace mode in the Rename tool in the Database update-only mode.  Select the files, configure the dialog, and look at the preview showing how the file path field will be modified in the database.

Thanks for this.  I've not used Find & Replace before.

Just one more question (I hope).   When I open the Find and Replace dialog, filename is not listed as a field option in the list on the left of the dialog box.  How do I make it show?

Thanks.  sskings
