17.0186 keeps crashing on start up
« on: October 04, 2012, 12:30:30 pm »

Dear sirs,

Not sure what prompted this, as I have not loaded anything in a while. But, every time I try to fire up MC, I get a dialog box pop up that says, "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

At first, the MC program never displayed. I tried loading the default DB, etc., from the MC dialog pop up, with no luck. I then uninstalled (with registry changes and the other tick box UN-ticked) and reinstalled. Now the program shows, briefly, but after about 10 sec, I get the same "MC 17 has stopped working box" box come up.

How may I proceed to get dear MC back to rights?

Thanks,
Arthur

Should I try uninstalling with the delete registry changes tick box checked?

It's worth trying an uninstall / reinstall.

Also, unplug extra devices (a phone, etc.).

You could use Help > Logging and mail the log to logs at jriver dot com if the problem persists.

Thanks.

So, I tried uninstalling again, this time with the registry box ticked. Restarted PC and reloaded MC. Still crashing about 15 seconds after launch, with the same dialog.

Upon uninstalling, I get these three dialog boxes, attached, that pop up, before a box that says uninstall successful.

I have tried to quickly tick the log before the program crashes. I seem to have been able to generate a log file and will mail it off now.

Thanks again,

Arthur

Would you be willing to zip and mail the contents of this folder to logs at jriver dot com:
C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 17\Library\

I'm suspicious that the podcast part of your library is corrupt, but it would help to have the library.

After sending me a copy for debugging, you could try removing podcast.xml from that folder and see if it fixes the crash.

Thanks.

Thanks for the attention. I did just email you the zipped contents of the folder requested. I tried deleting podcast.xml, but no luck; it still crashes after a few seconds.

Uninstall any plug-ins you're using.

As far as I am aware, I am not using any. I am now running a "new install" with the default library.

It looks like your library is corrupt.  You're going to have to restore from a backup (the program makes them automatically).

This isn't a common problem, so I'm not sure what might have happened.

I'm going to spend some more time tracing in the debugger, and I'll let you know if I learn anything more.

Digging deeper, there's a block of bad bytes in the "field (name).jmd" library file.

Starting around 132,701 bytes into the file, there are chunks of empty and random-like data.  It's not clear that the data is right until about 196608 (0x30000 in hex).

In other words, I think there's about a 65k chunk in the middle that's bad.  Interestingly we use a 65k write buffer when outputting the database.  The file continues after the bad chunk with valid data for a couple megabytes.

So I think one write failed.  This should never happen, so it likely indicates a hardware problem.  Have you had any other troubles with the drive holding your library?

Interesting indeed. I did a check disk (error-checking, chkdsk) subsequent to this issue coming up, an it did find errors, and repaired them.

I am not able to restore my library from back up, as the program crashes before being able to get that far. But what is crashing, at this point, is my new installation of MC, as I have uninstalled (with registry entries tick box checked, but the other, I think database files, unchecked). How may I proceed?

Thanks again!

Delete all the files in the library folder.

Then it will load with an empty library.

Then do a restore.
