To work-around it, manually set this number to 11 ( the value for Windows 8 ) using regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JRiver\Media Core\Installations\Media Center 17\OS Version

But normally this only happens if some compatibility layer tricks the program.  Did you install in compatibility mode?  Or did you restore a library from a different OS?

It would be nice to figure out the cause so we can make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Thanks.

Here's what I did:
I installed it into a directory which is common to both the newly installed win8,
and to win7 which I have installed on a different partition.

I didn't install in compatibility mode, but after posting, I tried to run it in compatibility mode (win7), and it worked fine.

I've now changed the reg key you suggested and it runs fine not in compatibility mode, so all is well.

thanks :)

now I understand what happened:

I keep reg files of all my installed programs, and I run them whenever I install a fresh operating system
(which happens quite a lot), to save changing my favorite settings for all programs
so I did it right after installing win8, and the key you mentioned was 10 because of the installation in win7.

In other words, it's was not media center's problem, it was mine :)

thanks again

If you get this error, just follow the instructions.

Namely, download the latest build and install it over the top of your existing installation.

By running through the installer, we can ensure that the new OS has any dependencies the program might need properly installed.

I'm getting the same error running Win 8 and my registry for OS Version says this under the Data column "0x000000b (11)". Is that correct?
I've tried re-installing also. Thanks in advance for the assist.
