Pane tagging check boxes
« on: January 17, 2013, 02:56:33 am »

I'm sure it's just part of my many mental issues, but I absolutely HATE those little check boxes popping up in the panes when I'm selecting my tunes.  I won't ever use them (I meticulously tag and rip with other programs). I love using MC 18 for playbook. Is there ANY way to disable the boxes from popping up in the panes??

Thanks!

Less frustration and more constructive information on your workflow and why they bother you so much typically helps getting better answers  ;D

Honestly those checkboxes have never bothered me, I never use them and never needed to. Also, they never prevented me from doing what I need to do and mind you, that's about everything: I don't use external programs.

If you could explain a little bit more about what is going wrong we can probably give you more constructive answers.

I hate them too. Never used them, probably never will. And that goes for pretty much anybody else as well I recon. Probably only the hardcore MC users and taggers that utilize these. That's why me and Dougr33 feel that they're just an annoyance.

I've learned to live with it, but I would love an option to disable them though.

Just because they are there and are useless or because they somehow interfere with your workflow?

Do you accidently click them?

Not criticizing or anything, just trying to understand why people hate them that's all :P.

Just because it's useless for us, I guess. Don't see how it can interfere to much with any workflow. It's just annoying to have so much boxes pop up each time you select an item. Why have something there that the majority of users don't use or understand how to use? It should at least be possible to disable them.

I hate them too.

instead of hating why not use the functions to get rid of them like add an expression
Code: [Select]
[File Type]&datatype=[list]
but it would be neat with a "read only" pane

Well I don't use them to select things but one thing I do find them useful for is to see which entries I have selected out of a selection in panes.

To clarify, I have Genre, Artist, Album, Filetype, bitrate and samplerate as Panes. I select 5 albums (not ticking their boxes but shift-clicking) from the Album pane. It will list the tracks below in the details pane. A selection of a track or multiple tracks will now tick the associated checkboxes across all Panes. This may include details that are not shown in collums, so in that particular situation I do find them useful, sometimes.

indeed that is what i do.. i love the checkboxes for the views i tag in. but in other views i use the expression lasse gives above

 :)
gab

edit.. i just checked.. i use
Code: [Select]
Clean([artiesten])&datatype=[list]without the clean you still get the checkboxen.  :P
guess you can add something else also to confuse mc. :)

Since I don't EVER use them (and please don't advise on how much I'm missing by not) I find them very visually annoying, as the come and go while I'm browsing my collection. Thanks for the advise on how to get better answers; your turn.

1) add or edit category
2) Choose Expression
3) paste the above code with your prefered field (genre, album or artist...)  (check gappie)
4) Press OK

When changing to Expression, change the name to the original Pane Name (ie, artist, album, etc).

The expression needs to be changed to the Pane name as well, the part artist, album, etc to match.

Code: [Select]
Clean([artiesten])&datatype=[list]
Once the checkboxes are gone I hope you can crack a smile again, because my initial reply was not meant to offend you mate. I simply wasn't sure what your problem was, whether it was cosmetic or you had a problem with its functionality somehow.

Great tip above.

I find those check boxes really useful for one specific task: Managing the assignment of files to multiple groups of playlists. I have a view with a pane for each playlist group, then click or unclick to assign/remove the file from the playlist.

For example, I have a group of playlists (music/audiobook/podcast/etc.) that I use to move items on or off my iPod. And another group that I use to queue items for priority consumption. Moving something from a queued playlist to an iPod playlist would be a pain without those check boxes.

If you're sure the field won't have empty values and is not a list type:

   [Artist]/

is sufficient (there is a space trailing the forward slash).

  [Artist]/
Can you translate what the slash means? Maybe this would have less overhead and be faster than the above approach?

MC's expression language escape character, so that the next whitespace character is not stripped by the expression engine.

The speed shouldn't matter too much - MC caches results.

Hah. That worked very well. Not great that I have to use an hour to do this on all my views field. I will manage though. However, I can't see why such a small thing could not be added as an option. But then again, I know you have your schedule full already.

True that! Every time a new version came out, I wasted time going thru every possible setting looking for its addition. Since I have things set up the way I like (and only use for music), I hadn't dug into custom views (though I'll start thinking about it now that they've killed my hated boxes!!)

that is true. but considering i made those views a long time ago, and they just stick. when you make a view and you know about it, using it is not really slowing down things.. its like an option in my opinion.
