Audio File naming and organization
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:01:28 pm »

This has likely been covered, but I didn't find it.

What have people found to be the best ways to name and organize audio files? That is, what best practices are used for folder and file naming for audio?

I also have a rather large collection of unreleased live material, I'd like to know how people are dealing with that.

Thanks!

It depends on how you go about listening and what you listen to.  MC18 is very flexible, and can be customized for any particular way.

For example, for album oriented listening, see (somewhat long):

If by "unreleased live" you mean traded ("etree"), then see:

Pretty common is to use a rule such as the following in Options > File Locations > Audio

   Folder rule: [Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]
   Filename rule: [Track #] [Name]

If you want to further break down Album to include [Disc #] when it exists:

   Filename rule: [Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]Delimit([Disc #], /) ,/ /(Disc/ )

You can do similarly with Live albums provided you have the word "Live" in some tag such as an Edition tag, etc.

Thanks to both MrC and kstuart for the prompt replies. Both provide really good info.

kstuart, thanks for the detailed post you pointed to. Lots of really good info there, and I am not done reading it. My personal listening is album-focused, so your observations and recommendations are spot-on.

I haven't read the traded link, but I'll get to that today. Yes, I did mean etree-type traded recordings.

Thanks again to both of you!
