Looking for a tip on smartlist burning
« on: March 28, 2002, 12:56:35 pm »

I've only recently started delving into the power and glory of smartlists, but I'm wondering if there's a shortcut in syntax or any other way around the following:

--Typical use of my smartlists are to get a random selection of tracks from XYZ genres not greater than 650mb for burn to disc or 128 for download to player. I want these tracks to be not only randomly selected, but randomly ordered.

To get a randomly ordered burn, I must send the smartlist contents to playing now, then reshuffle, then send the results to the burner. Is there a shorter, one-step kinda way? I would guess that this would involve turning off the sorting in the smartlist view, because the view always needs to sort it by SOMETHING. Would be cool if it were more like playing now.

Also, and I guess this becomes more of a feature request, what will happen in the above situation is that I'll spin/refresh my smartlists until I get a selection of tracks that seems cool. If I feel like accepting the order, when I click on send to the burner, I don't get the tracks I just saw because the smartlist will have spun/refreshed again for the sending. Instead I'll have a whole new selection of tracks, which is annoying. Is there any way around these items I've noted?

When you "click on send to the burner" are you just clicking the menu bar button?

I've noticed the same thing when searching (with time/size limit) and using the menu option (in the search window) for "Play Results." My solution to aviod the new search MJ wants to do was to select all the items found and do a right-click "Play Now." This should be an option for you: "Send to>Device>Burner."

Thanks, but that's the same workaround I was describing in paragraph #3, above.

Gurus, is there a Better Way?

Let me understand this, you have a device that reads tracks in the order that MJ burns them?
That is way cool.
No matter how I burn them, my MP3 CDR player (Phillips)reads them alphabetically.

Most of the time I just go audio CD, but there should be a new Kenwood in the dash early next week and we'll see how that behaves. So, obviously, the order does get followed in that situation.

I just discovered, in my attempts to work around this, that the same refresh happens when you try to do a direct send from the smartlist to a new playlist. You end up with a whole new selection of tracks. Yuck.
