Wndows 7 - Read Only driving me mad!
« on: December 08, 2013, 01:54:03 am »

Hi All,

I believe that this is a known quirk of Win 7 that it makes files read only by default?

This is driving me crazy when JRiver pops up that it cannot commit tag changes because files are read only ....

Is there no setting or fix so that JR can automatically set the file attribute to not read only?

Cheers.

Which files are we talking about and where are they located?

Hi,

This applies to all files (video, audio) as I copy them into folders on my NAS.

So, I reset the read only attribute through the Windows 7 properties dialogue.

Cheers.

I don't think that has got anything to do with Windows 7.

I think its more likely permissions on your NAS are not setup properly.

Mind you, folders always have read only bit set so ignore that. Only look at files.

Windows can keep certain files read only, but as far as I'm concerned that only applies to protected system and OS folders on the system partition (most often C:), like the Windows folder, Program Files, etc. Technically speaking this is not done with the read-only attribute bit but with user permissions (security).

Thanks for that - I didn't know about the folder being set as read only.

I had a poke around my NAS (it's a QNAP 432) and couldn't see anything relevant.

I guess I'll live with it  for now.

It is likely that this is due to file ownership or permissions issues on the filesystem:

I see the same thing and it IS very annoying. Problem is that it shows up seemingly at random, despite all the permissions I set.
