Windows 8.1 upgrade hangs - any ideas?
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:53:18 pm »

Windows 8.1 freezes at 53% complete while "Getting devices ready".

Google search suggests many people are seeing this but not too many suggestions on how to fix. One person suggested I disable nics in bios and unplug USB devices which I did but it did not help. Also confirmed I have all Windows Updates installed.

My system is fairly new with nothing unusual except I have a second video card (in addition to integrated graphics) which I suspect might be the problem but I don't want to tear my system apart to verify this hunch.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Set preferred videocard to PCI-E, or discrete. Whatever its called in your BIOS. Or temporarily disable the integrated one if you can.

Just a hunch though, no idea if its going to work or not.

If you think it might be that, just pull the discreet video card and use the onboard one to get the upgrade done.

I have discreet and onboard installed and enabled on my HTPC, though, and had no issues.

I had nothing but problems with those firewire cards - they mostly did not work at all!

I'd heard that too so I carefully researched them before buying this one 12 months ago. And it worked fine with Windows 8.

Always disable integrated hardware, use default timings for mem, and remove all peripherals prior to trying to upgrade :)
KB and mouse and video should be all that is needed.
Glad you got it figured out.
I wouldn't be surprised if your FireWire card gives you issues AFTER the upgrade though...

We'll probably never know as she's not going back in.

Strip your system to basic minimum:
- CPU, RAM, one HD, one DVD, motherboard video
- Set BIOS to default

Install 8.1. If it crashes, your motherboard is faulty.
