What are the ticks next to movies/tv shows in theater view? I guessed they are for 'watched', but shows I have watched aren't ticked, but the 'number of plays' tag shows it has

Yes, watched, controlled by the expression: TVInfo(WatchedDisplay)

To check what it is calculating in Standard View, you need to right click on the header -> Add Expression Column and put it in. 

That may give you an idea of why a watched show isn't ticked.  I believe the threshold for showing as watched is that the bookmark goes past 90%.
