Is there a way to introduce empty columns as spacers, e.g. in panes view? I've already jimmy-rigged this by using various columns that I would not otherwise use and making them very narrow, but it would be nice to have a more elegant solution.

Not directly.  The best I think you can do is add an expression column with <space> as the title and <space> as the expression.  You're still stuck with the All row, however.
