Question on HDMI audio output [newbie question!]
« on: May 21, 2014, 04:39:31 am »

Hello,

I'm considering switching to HDMI instead of analog outputs from the soundcard. Will I still be able to use the JRiver DSPs (as long as I don't bitstream)?

Best regards,
Mikkel

Mikkel, I work with HDMI for audio (2ch Redbook) with no bitstreaming in sight to my digital DAC/Amp and I've got the following DSP functions enabled:
  • Output Format
  • Volume Levelling
  • Adaptive Volume
  • Room Correction

Works no problem.

Give it a go and see how you like it.

Thx both for your reply. I'm wonderin, are all onboard HDMI-outputs capable of transmitting 7.1 audio? I have an ATI 4250 onboard GPU and don't really know if I can use JRSS to upmix or if it is only 2-channel audio.

I cannot really test it since I don't have a receiver with HDMI input yet. So any thoughts are appreciated.

Best regards,

You'll just have to do some research on that GPU.

My prelim googling indicates that it will only do 2-channel LPCM:

Also, whether it reads the EDID correctly from your receiver for bitstreaming is a complete different story. Those older onboard ATIs are notoriously fickle creatures.
It looks like some people had better success with bitstreaming by manually installing the realtek drivers for the card, but I would take that with several grains of salt.

tl;dr I would buy a better card, you can get a hd5450 for $25 or something similar
