Samsung SmartTV disconnects/crashes during DLNA playback
« on: August 11, 2014, 09:43:24 am »

I have a Samsung UN32EH5300 TV which has DLNA playback capability.  Unfortunately, I have been completely unable to get it to work nicely with MC.  Whenever I play back video content of any type/format, I will receive a Disconnected error at the completion of a file, or often in the middle of playback.  The disconnect results in being unable to reconnect to any MC DLNA server until a manual restart of MC server.

1. I have latest version of MC19 and television's firmware
2. I have tried all different flavors of DLNA preset server types, including Samsung, Generic, PS3, and Sony.  I have also made sure DLNA Extra was on for some of the tests.
3. I have tried different video convert options from Always Convert to Never Convert.
4. I have tried creating a brand new library on a server set up on a different computer with the same results.
5. I have experimented with some different DLNA override settings, but not extensively since I really don't understand this parameter very well.
6. TV works fine with other DLNA and media renderers, and seems to works correctly with MC if rendering Photos or Audio

Not sure what else to try

What version of MC are you using?

I actually had that version on one of my test beds because it is set to Latest instead of Stable.  I updated my 2nd test installation on a different machine to .161

I am experiencing the same problems.  I did some more testing and here are the results:
1. Playback will fail mid-way through almost any video played with a Connection Lost error on the TV
2. I experience the exact same failures with video playback using Gizmo to play video content from an MC media server to the TV device.  However, with Gizmo, I can re-launch videos, whereas playback failures through the TV's interface causes the DLNA servers to disappear from the list of available servers, even after turning the TV off and back on, until MC's servers are restarted.

Are you using wifi? In which case, perhaps indeed the wifi connection is getting broken? Did you try it with wired Ethernet?

There is no wire Ethernet in that room, but I can move the TV to another area and retry there.  However, the TV streams fine from a number of other sources without interruption and WiFi mobile devices in that room can stream the same content from the DLNA server, so that would seem to indicate something more than WiFi is at play here.

I test the television directly to wired Ethernet last night and can confirm the disconnection problen remains unchanged. Videos play back but, within a minute or two, playback will abruptly stop with a device disconnected error and the MC DLNA servers all disappear.

I've tried reducing the bandwidth usage to low, played low def source, all with same results. I don't discount that the TV may be contributing to the problems the way it handles DLNA, but it's a major brand that works with a number of other streaming sources over the same network and equipment so I would like to believe MC is capable of working through it if I could get the settings adjusted.

Ok that at least rules out one potential cause.

I am not with JRiver so let us wait to see what the guys at JRiver say. However my own guess is that the next step might require you to run a Wireshark capture on the communication between the two devices and look for any HTTP 40x or 50x errors; and checking if the transactions use HTTP Keep-Alives; and checking which device is finally closing the sockets. But this is a very technical exercise that you should not attempt if you don't understand what I am talking about  :P

I understand the principles behind what you're saying and could probably get the test completed, but there's a pretty good chance I wouldn't know how to interpret the results of the test, so will definitely wait for some JRiver intervention.  Thanks for the help.
