For a long while now, whenever I start typing into the Series box in the Action Window, it starts displaying results, but they are not in alphabetical order, in fact, sometimes it shows stuff that doesn't seem to match at all.  I suspect it's searching all fields for matches, but since I'm typing in the Series field, it seems it should search that field 'first' and show me results that match what I'm typing.

I was actually trying to enter Big Bang Theory, which should be listed before all these results, but isn't even in the list.

It may be in the "See all 16 results" section.
I don't understand why Media Center doesn't just display the full list.
 
As for the order, I'm guessing they are displayed in "most relevant" order for the search.

Yeah, I'm sure it's in the full list of 16, but it seems it should default to displaying results based on alphabetical order, i.e. Big Bang Theory before Biutiful, etc

Why do you say that? If I was searching for Biutiful rather than Big then the behavior you ask for, would piss me off..

Why?!?

Bi(g) comes before Bi(u), why would showing Big before Biu bother you so much?  MC can't KNOW you want Biutiful when you type Bi, so the only logical choice is to show results in alphabetical order, no?  If you add the "u" after "Bi", then it would show you Biutiful, as you wish, but it should not show that before Big, when it only has Bi, in the box.

Regardless, it should NOT show Robin Hood in the first 3 results, and not show Big Bang Theory when Bi is all that's been entered; agreed?

I was just thinking about this last night - while it may be trying to suggest more relevant results, I'm not sure that whatever is being used to determine this is actually working correctly.
 
For example, I would expect tags with the most amount of content to be displayed first, and an A-Z sort on the others if it was "most relevant" rather than alphabetical sorting being used.
 
And again, I do not understand the logic behind hiding any of the results. It's just a nuisance.

I agree here.  The current implementation (which is quite old, if I remember correctly, circa MC13) may not be ideal.

However... I don't agree with this:

Completely disagree.  Alphabetical order is not very useful in the vast majority of my use cases.  Frequency of occurrence and/or usage is WAY more important.  And I think that's where your example breaks down, because you want it to work when you only type two letters.  It is looking at more fields than just [Series] (obviously). Two letters like that probably show up in all SORTS of places in your metadata for those files.

So... If you've only ever watched 2% of your Big Bang Theory episodes, and none for a while, but you just watched part of Biutiful yesterday?

Alphabetical order makes sense for the file listing.  And you can search within those.  But, I don't think it "has to be" the best way for the search box.  Google doesn't order anything alphabetically.

Again, not saying the current algorithm implementation is optimal.  But "just show them and search them alphabetically" isn't the answer either.

I misunderstood.  In that case, I agree. I think I voted against that change when it was implemented.

I didn't do it (at least not on purpose, unless I somehow pocket-deleted it on my phone).  I'd seen it before.  Not sure what happened, but I don't think there is any way to restore deleted posts.

okay, not a big deal.

the jist is that I'm talking about entering a value in the Series field of the Action window, not the general search box in the upper right.  When entering the value here, I think it should display matches that start the same as what has been typed, then alphabetically from there, and not try to use some intelligence to guess what I'm trying to type.

So JRiver knows what my 'issue' refers to
