Raise overall volume to match inputs on preamp?
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:24:37 am »

I have been using volume leveling and I like it. Where many sacd iso files used to be much lower they are now at a similar level or much louder than wave and flac files. However it would be nice to raise the overall output to match the other input levels on my preamp. I have the volume in MC set to disabled although all of the other volume settings seem to sound the same to me. I also have the volume control on my w4s dac defeated.
Is there any way to raise the overall volume level to the dac after dps studio in MC?

Where I have the volume on my ARC Ref3 set at 3 when listening to records or the tuner, I have it set to over 10 when using MC.

Clear as mud, right?

Thanks

You would have to set the offset on your preamp.
The volume level is reduced because a target average volume of -23 LU (dB) is required to prevent clipping or uneven leveling with dynamic tracks.

Reduce the levels of the other inputs to match.

What you said is what I have been doing. I guess the option to raise the volume after Studio is not going to be an option. Let me re phrase, Is it possible to add a volume control option after DSP? If so might it be considered?

Thanks

If you really must, you can raise the volume with a parametric equalizer in the DSP, but I would advise against that.

I thought about it and came to the same conclusion. I not big on messing with the signal chain, so volume leveling for me was a big step.

The problem is that if you boost the volume via DSP, it will run into clipping.
This means that if you were to assign +10dB after leveling for example, some tracks might have the full +10dB applied, but others may only get +2dB or less, since they would clip if you pushed them any louder.

Rather than all being centered around an average of -23dB, one track would now be -13dB and the other would be -21dB; an 8dB difference that would be very noticeable.

This is part of the reason why the R128 Leveling is so much better than the old ReplayGain system - the target is -23dB rather than, if I recall correctly, -16dB.

I think I get it.
Those sacd iso files with the -3db mixes are going to keep waking me up.  :)

Thanks again

you could try the adaptive leveling to see how you think it sounds at the same time as leveling. It does have the effect of canceling the leveling somewhat, but its supposed to be designed to work "intelligently" with volume leveling.

I'm having an issue or two with volume leveling in version 20, losing lots of detail with clip protection enabled when this is switched on  .. but I'll make a separate post to not hijack the thread.

I tried it and got a 1.3 db boost on the currently playing flac file that has -10db leveling.

Cool

Adaptive volume in the peak mode, combined with leveling, will try to play the current playlist at the maximum level possible.

So every track in the playlist should be normalized to -23dB, and then if there is any headroom available, the volume will be pushed up as high as it can.

This can make playback louder, and it will be level within the playlist, but as the playlist changes, the volume level can change too, so you may be reaching for the volume control more frequently.

Using leveling alone should allow you to leave the volume control alone most of the time.

I was wondering about this too.  Whatever happened to the "reference level" for volume leveling (I'm not sure what exactly it was called)?  It was a numeric spinner on the Volume Leveling section of DSP Studio that allowed you to boost the overall volume level when applying volume leveling.  I guess this may have been replaced with "adaptive volume" but I'm not sure it is the same thing and is certainly not as clear how to use it as the old mechanism.
