gizmo "error connecting to server" on android phone

While using gizmo, I can play music from my server (an iMac) and chromecast to a chromecast audio device.  However, after playing for a few minutes, gizmo starts showing "error connecting to server": it flickers (i.e., comes and goes).  When that happens the music also skips skips songs.

This is pretty confusing:
1. Once I start chromecasting from gizmo on my pixel 2 phone, I'd expect that my phone is irrelevant: the server is actually sending data directly to chromecast.  So my phone not being able to connect to the server should be irrelevant...the music should keep playing. 
2. I've setup my wifi so that my server (the iMac) has a fixed ip address...others had reported issues related to this.
3. I've restarted media center, rebooted my imac, rebooted my phone and none of that has helped.

Any tips for how to track down these errors would be much appreciated.
