Restrict MC library for kids?
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:09:38 pm »

Is there any way to restrict MC library? I'd like to set it up for my kids account and restrict which movies and audio they have access to. Is there any way to do that today?

Use the 'User Account' feature.  Look at View > User in the menu.

Was just shown it yesterday and had no idea previously, so figured it needed to be shared! :P

Thanks for the wiki writeup.

All this seems to work just fine if you are only using the server or another copy of MC as the client. MC client copy can change it's user setting without directly affecting the server user setting which is good so it can be set to a restricted account and used by kids. I've set them up with a tablet using gizmo and they only see their own content as long as the server is set to the correct user but since gizmo doesn't have the same ability as a MC client to change the user on it's own side I am also restricted in gizmo to only the kids content. It would be nice if gizmo could set its own user as MC client can. It's 90% there but this one missing feature makes it a pain to use because either kids or adult can access remotely but not both.

I also want to restrict access for my kids.

More specifically I want my 9 year old to be able to run his own library server client so he can create/edit his own playlists but I don't want him to be able to edit or delete any media from the shared library.

I thought I could disable library sync, but then of course his playlists don't update either.

Does anybody have a clever way of setting up a Read-only Library Server Client that can still create/edit its own playlists???

thanks
Richard

Mmm would it work if you make the Media Source Drive(s) read only to his account?  He could still add/edit (even delete) from the Library itself but could not update tags, move, add or delete actual content on your drives.  If you wanted you could have most folders on the file system as Read Only but have one are as Read/Write if you wanted to give him more power of a subset.

But doesn't the library server do the actual deletes etc, so giving a client read-only won't stop that.
