Can a Trial version of MC 20 Connect to Diskstation server?
« on: April 27, 2015, 08:55:58 am »

Hi All,

A few facts that may affect the answer....
I just cracked open an ASUS Transformer 2-in-1.  No,  not a great 2-in-1 by any means, but hopefully enough to run JRiver to a
DAC for non-critrical listening (outdoor-patio environment).

Anyway. The ASUS is running Win 8.1 and is 32 bit (hopefully that doesn't present any compatibility issues).

I installed the trial version of JRiver.  When I go into settings I can't point to the Diskstation.  I know that the ASUS can
"see it" because it shows up with all my music in File Explorer.

Can someone tell me why I wouldn't see it in the JRiver Options --> File Location list?

I do intend to go ahead any add another license to my existing JRiver license, but wanted to make sure that all will work with
my new laptop first.

TIA,
Jay.

A few licensing points:

1) The trial is fully featured (no functionality removed), so that should not be the issue.
2) If you already have a JRiver for windows license, you can install it on the Transformer right now (to my knowledge, you can install a single license on all computers you own within reason).  If you have a mac or linux license, you would need to upgrade to the master license.

If you can see the files in explorer it's very odd that you can't see them in JRiver.  Where do you see them in file explorer?  As a drive (with a letter like D: or E:)?  Or under the "network" section below the actual drives?  If it's in the network section, you may need to map it as a drive (an option in the right-click menu) to make it easier to browse to in JRiver.  There are other ways to do it too (UNC paths), but mapping the drive is probably the easiest thing.

The Tools/Options/File Location settings tell MC where to store files when you rip a CD or DVD.  It does not tell MC where to look for existing files.

The Tools/Import command tells MC to import files manually or to set up automatic importing.  If you want to import files manually, MC will prompt you for a location.

You can configure MC to auto-import files from a list of locations that you specify.  Once you have entered that list, MC will scan those locations in the background at intervals.

Thanks for your help this far. But...

To answer  mwillems -
Diskstation is sitting in File Explorer under Networks, without a drive letter.  If I try to MAP it says it can't find it.
I have my main Music Server (a Dell 2-in1 PC) set up and it looks the same way, but JRiver DOES find Diskstation.

For listener suggestion -
I can't import either because when I browse, it won't find the Diskstation in the list.

One thing that might be screwy, is that when I set up this new machine I used the same hotmail email
and password as my main Music Server PC.  However, that PC is not even on.

Oh, One last thing, on my main desktop (hardwired to router) I have McAfee running I can see the new ASUS in the Network Map.
I'm wondering if I need to do some sort of access grant there, but I don't really see anything to let me do that.  I'm was assuming if
it's listed in the Network Map all is well.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Sorry to be a pest, but I haven't gotten this to work yet. After a couple of calls to ASUS
they are telling me that if File Explorer sees the NAS, then it must be a problem with JRiver.

I looked at my other 2-in-1 (Dell Win 8.1 / 64bit) and it seems to be set up exactly the same
and it sees the NAS?

Are there any new suggestions that might work?
I guess to recap....
1. Can it be a 32 bit issue?
2. Do I maybe have to set up something on my Desktop (which is hardwired to router that is hardwired to NAS) to let
the ASUS see the drive.
3. If I can get my NAS contents on their ASUS Webstorage cloud (not the preferred method), can JRiver be made to
point to the ASUS cloud? How would I set that up?

Thank you,
Jsy

One possible source of confusion is that a NAS can present itself in two ways.

1.  An ordinary file server, visible to other machines on the network as a drive.

2.  A DLNA or UPnP server.

When you use Explorer, you may see #2, but not #1.  You might try a right click on whatever you do see to see what you can learn.

Also, a firewall may block access.

Thanks Jim,

I have the Windows Firewall turned off.
As far as "ordinary" File server -vs DLNA.  Sounds like I want it to be File Server, is that correct?

Using Explorer, under Network, do you see the NAS?  Can you put a file on it?

I'm not home with my computer right now, but I do see it under Network section of File explorer.
I didn't try to write to it, but I can see the files.

If you can see the files you can probably import them.  Did you try that?

Tools > Import > Autoimport

Add or remove directories and edit them.  Use the browse button to find your NAS.

I believe I tried that. The bottom line (in case I'm not stating it properly) the NAS doesn't show up in any of the
JRiver "Browse" list.  It shows my local drives and two of the PCs on my network, just not the NAS.

As for my 3rd question above.... I'd definitely would like to build library from NAS, but if it becomes too big a
problem, can I point JRiver browser button to a cloud (ASUSWebStorage)? If so, can you point me to directions on that?

Thanks,
Jay

You don't want to try anything "cloud" with JRiver.  It's not local to your network so it would definitely be inferior to using your NAS directly over your LAN.

The problem seems to be that you can't see your NAS as a drive letter.  That's step #1 as far as I'm concerned.  Get the NAS set up so you can map a drive and you should be golden from there.  I haven't used Windows 7 (or <shudder> 8) enough to be super familiar with the dialogs, but it can't be super duper difficult.

I would think if you could see the files in Windows Explorer (the file explorer, NOT IE) that mapping a drive would probably just require a right click and choosing a drive letter and some options.

Perhaps you should engage a person you know that's good with computers, or call tech support for the manufacturer of your NAS device.  Once you get a drive mapped everything else should fall into place very easily.

Good luck!

Brian.

Thanks Brian.
But part of the problem is I can't assign it a drive number. And it works on two other computers I have without it having
been mapped.

If I have some time later I'll send some screen shots. And definable, set aside some time to call tech support.
I've been trying to avoid log hold times and hard to understand reps, hoping for a quick fix here.  It sort
of does seem like a JRiver issue, but maybe not.

I appreciate all the help so far, but it's not looking like a quick fix is going to be possible.

If you can't map it as a drive letter in explorer it is definitely not a JRiver issue (that means windows can't see it as a file server either)

Great news!
Not sure what changed in the past few hours, but I clicked on DISKSTATION in File Explorer and a login-credential box came up.
Put in my info and i connected instantly. Then off to JRiver to find NAS in the browse list.

Computers  ?

I think my problems are all solved now. Thanks ALL for taking the time to try to help,
