Author Topic: Can't play 88.2 or 96khz files even though my dac supports them  (Read 2318 times)

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate and have the Schiit Modi plugged into a usb 2.0 port and it works fine unless I want to play a file higher than 48khz bit perfect. I know the modi is supposed to support 88.2 and 96khz but for some reason I cannot get those to sample rates to work in wasapi. JRiver just keeps wanting to downsample to 48k. It sounds fine and I probably wouldn't hear any difference at the higher sample rates, but still being that it (may dac) is supposed to support those rates I would like to get to the source of the problem. If any of you have had this issue and have fixed the problem I would really like to hear about the solution.
Best Wishes

Make sure the drivers for your DAC are properly installed.  Read:

There are no drivers to install with this dac.

I have checked the output in DSP and when I try to play a 88.2 or 96khz or higher file it tells me that this cannot be done and wants to set everthing higher than 48k to 48Khz. I have everthing higher than 96khz to downsample to 96khz being that the modi doesn't support anything higher than 96khz. When I go into the sound settings in control panel and select properties then the advanced tab it doesn't show anything higher than 24/48 supported, but with the onboard crap dac on my laptop it goes all the way to 24/192. I contacted Schiit support but their support is schitt.

ALL DACs need drivers under Windows to operate at higher data rates. Microsoft does not provide a generic driver for that purpose, even though there is a standard spec - which is implemented in MacOS for example. The driver provided in Windows operates in the ancient synchronous USB mode which cannot significantly exceed CD quality.

Schiit provides a unified driver for all their DACs. Go to the Modi (2) web page http://schiit.com/products/modi-2, look for the Downloads tab, last item on the list of downloads. Don't forget to configure the MC audio output to the Modi.

Good luck...
