Showing Album release or publisher or comments
« on: June 02, 2015, 05:21:53 pm »

I have a number of albums in my collection that have the publisher or release information embedded into the title.  Something like Pink Floyd's The Wall shows up as:  The Wall (MFSL UDCD 2-537) .

That's from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs and presumably the catalog number.  To me it doesn't make tons of sense to keep it in the Album field; it's not exactly where it belongs.  So I thought that this might be something that belongs in the Comment field.  I added some Comment fields to a few for a test and then went about trying to display them.

The idea would be to have album views show the Album title as well as the Comment field, formatted in some friendly way.  In Albums view I went to Thumbnail Text and added Comment to part of the text.  It shows as blank.  So I did some web searches and found that at least one other person has reported this as not working:  Namely that the Comment field won't show up in some views, like the album view I'm discussing.

It all makes me wonder if I'm missing something about trying to show this information in a friendly way.  Is there another way of capturing and presenting this information?  Some way of using views that I don't know?  Views are VERY complicated; there are a lot of options I haven't explored yet.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian.

IIRC [comment] doesn't work because it's an unlimited text field (not the technical name LOL) so displaying it in the thumbnail text could be bad, like lyrics

i made a [remaster info] field which has something simple like "MFSL 1997 bonus tracks" and that field displays fine in the thumbnail text...

i could be wrong about it all but i'm happy with my method and honestly it makes more sense than cramming info into the comment field

I guess a followon question, and a reason I posted was to ask:  What would the comment field ever be used for?  Display as a column doesn't make a lot of sense, but I guess you could...

Ferday:  Thanks for the additional information.  :)

well right now i'm listening to Janis Joplin - Pearl

in the [remaster] field i have "remaster Columbia 2005"
in the [comment] field i have "Disc 1 original remaster, Disc 2 Live from Festival Express Tour 1971"

sometimes i'll post a review or even some links that i found interesting etc. in the comments field

Yes, but how do you ever SEE the Comment field?  Do you open the tagging pane?  I can't imagine you have it as a column in Now Playing....

See what I mean?  What good is a field if you can't conveniently display it somewhere that you'll see it?  I'm not complaining... just making an observation because I'm baffled about how to go about using these kinds of fields.

BTW, where do you display your Remaster field?

Yeah I open the tagging pane. I guess I think of "comments" or "notes" as things I don't really care about but want to have as part of the collection.  Like country, or label info, or producer etc. I like having it there but really I don't care to see it often

As for remaster info, I'm a hardcore standard view guy so I normally use it in columns, I have a view that puts it in the album thumbnail, and on my DLNA i use it to sort

At some point I'd like to make a new field (remaster year) and do an isempty to display but I'm lazy
