Hi,

Since about v20.0.100 (I think), tags of files just dropped into Playing Now for tagging purposes do not update as I edit the info in MC. The info displayed in Playing Now, while I'm editing, updates and stays on screen; however, moving the files and Importing them reverts back to pre-edited tags.

For years I've been dropping raw or poorly formatted files temporarily into Playing Now, editing info there, Rename/Moving into my library path, and then running an auto-import. I can no longer do this because all pre-import info editing is lost.

I tried several non-imported files, edited various tags etc., while watching the external file time stamps -- and the Modified never changes.

Was there a change causing non-imported files to NOT update internal tags "when info changes"?

New bug?

Thanks.

Are you sure you have "Update Tags When File Info Changes" setting turned on ?

I don't think this ever worked. The update from file changes is a function of Auto-Import.  It wouldn't update files in folders it isn't watching.  And if it was watching them, it would have imported them.

kstuart:  Yup, thanks.

glynor:  Been doin' it exactly that way several times a week for probably 15 years, since Media Jukebox days. ;) E.g. -- If you drop an external file into Playing Now, and tag new cover art (embed), it embeds it in the file then and there (or it did).

Just did a thorough review and retest; there has definitely been a fundamental change in how MC processes info changes in non-imported files.

BEFORE:

1. Drop non-watched, non-imported files into Playing Now
2. Make any info changes, incl. Analyze, incl. Cover Art in Playing now/tagging column
3. Rename/Move files using MC Rename/Move into watched location
4. Run MC auto-import
5. Files are in database with updated info, and tags in files reflect same changes

NOW:

1.-4. Above same
5. Files are in database ***but with previous, pre-editing data***, and tags in files ***do not reflect updated data***

What happens if you run Import again with the option "Update for external changes" enabled?

Ahh, you're using MC to tag them. Explaining the workflow is key. I had no idea what you meant until then.

Matt: "Update for External Changes" was/is on throughout (never has been off)

Are you sure you didn't disable tagging?  That would, obviously, break that system.

Tools > Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes

By the way, there's no reason to do it that way, if you're interested. You can very easily import everything, but have them filtered out of your views until you "say so" (when they're tagged).

Ask if you want to know how.

Sure, I'd be interested to know that too. (Thanks.)

However, I still feel it's worthwhile to point out that a major aspect of how/when MC edits tags inside files has changed, apparently without conscious intent by the developer(s). I doubt I'm the only one who has used this workflow flawlessly for over a decade and has noticed it suddenly gone, with no apparent reason. MC was always useful for *just* editing tags, when needed, unrelated to library management etc, (e.g., ad hoc cases where you just want to edit some tags for a special file you're e-mailing or something; this functionality is now encumbered by the need to import, etc., etc.)

Was there some kind of process change made under the hood recently that inadvertently led to this?

Sure, I can follow up with a description of what I meant.  But, I completely agree, it should work.

I can do a test, but before I do, can you confirm this:

Thank you. And what format are the files?

(This also won't work if MC can't tag the file format.)

Perhaps I should also note that I'm running "Portable". However, I've been running "Portable" since v.19 and the phenomenon as described did not appear until approx. v.20.0.100.

K. If I can't reproduce then that'll be a good clue.
