How to mix to mono but output to 2 channels?
« on: June 10, 2015, 04:02:28 pm »

I have a single 2 way active speaker. I want to play some stereo tracks through it and use jriver to implement a quick and dirty crossover. Am I correct in thinking that I need to;

- set output format to stereo
- add PEQ to mix L + R to each channel
- attenuate each channel by ~6dB
- add PEQ stage to do the high/low pass
- profit!

Adjust volume of left and right by -6.01 dB.
Add right to left.
Copy left to right.
Low/high-pass left/right etc.

That should get you 90% of the way there, but you'll still need to set the delay or you will likely get poor results (unless the high and low frequency drivers just so happen to have their voice coils in perfect vertical alignment).  And by poor results it won't necessarily be subtle; you could (worst case) wind up with a 30dB null an octave wide.  I'd recommend using the greatest null method for a quick and dirty approach (takes about five minutes with a mic and pink noise).

Also, for best results be sure to stack two identical built in high passes or low passes to make a linkwitz-riley filter (or else you'll have a 3dB lump).  Two 12dB's stacked makes a nice 4th order LR which is phase coherent and sums flat.

this is purely for a "I've spent months (mild exaggeration but it feels that way) building this thing, now make some sound" quick test, the mic will see some work this weekend for sure :)

I take it (from http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Parametric_Equalizer#High_Pass_Filter) that the high/low pass are different orders of bw filter, is that right?

Yes, all the built in high and low passes are textbook butterworths, which can be combined to make linkwitz-rileys. If you want a bessel you're on your own  ;D
