Windows Streaming Media
« on: February 12, 2003, 05:43:18 pm »

Anyone have any thoughts on the optimal bit rate to encode wma files?
These are foreign language listening exercises, made up of mostly dialog.
I need the best quality in the smallest size.

Thanks

John

Do you mean wma input streams or wma output files?

MJ's bitrates for WMA encoding can go as low as 5 kb/s. That may be OK for just speech (and nothing else). Personally I wouldn't go lower than 32 kb/s. That way if there is some background music it won't sound too attrocious. There are better formats/encoders for speech (ie: Speeks). To play in MJ you would need the WinAmp 2.xx Speeks plug-ins (if they exist).

also some encoders will go mono and that would save 1\2 the drive space
