replay gain information
« on: September 08, 2003, 08:19:32 am »

i am unsure exactly where replay gain information is stored in mc9.  on the help program it states that it is stored in the database and the file itself.  it also states though that the original file is unaffected.  i had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall media center 9, and i expected to have to complete audio analysis again for my audio library, but it appears to have stored the information.

could someone clarify this process for me please.  is the original file really unaffected?

thanks, nick  :P.

As I understand it.  The music data is not changed at all.

However, the values that MC uses to change the playback level at runtime is stored inside the MC db and in the tags stored inside the file.

The music data is not modified in anyway by replay gain.  Only tag info is changed which MC may or may choose to use during playback (if RG is on).

Changing tag info does not change the music bits, justd like  changing an artist tag name does not change the music data.

so, if i had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall mc9, the replay gain info would stay as a tag on the original file, so mc9 would recognise this info again.  great.....

so, for what purpose is the info stored in the 'database'.  i presume that databse is a part of the mc9 program, so in reinstalling it i would lose this information.  so my question is, do i need this information in the databse to make replay gain work properly on the files that were 'audio analysed' using my previous installation of mc9?  can i trust the replaygain values i have in the tag info, without the databse info?

i hope this is clear,

thanks, nick.

Reading tags from the files is slower than accessing the local database. For example, it wouldn't be effective to do a search by Artist reading the tags from the files. That's why MC keeps a local database of tag information. When the files are imported, MC reads their tag information and stores it in the local database. As far as I know, MC always uses the local database for all functions, so if a certain tag were in the file but not in the database, then it would be like the tag didn't exist. If you were to reinstall MC9, losing the local database, when you reimported the files, any information that was stored in the files' tags would be copied to the database.
