Photo Archiving
« on: August 29, 2003, 07:55:28 pm »

I apologize in advance if this has all been covered before.

I am using Media Center for managing my digital photos as much if not more than listening to music these days.

My digital picture collection is quickly filling up my drive.  I burn most of my photos to cd at some point but I would like to use media center to help keep it all organized and free up some space on my drive.

This is what I would like to do but am not sure that I can in Media Center currently:

I want to archive all of my fully tagged photos to CDR at their full resolutions.
I would like MC to keep all the tags etc in the library as well as a thumbnail of the picture at screen resolution.
I would also create a custom field that would tell me what CDR the full resolution picture was on as well as any file path I may need.
This would allow me to show a slide show and also find the original if I wanted to make a print.

Can MC do ALL of this for me today?

If so what are the steps?

Thanks for any help or ideas you can offer.

MC can pretty much do that.  Archiving to CD isn't automatic, but if you know what you want to write to CD, you can burn a data CD of what you select with MC.

MC stores info in its own database (library) and in a tag in the jpg itself.

Why not also keep a copy of the original on the drive?  Drives are inexpensive these days.

I'd STRONGLY recommend Jim's suggestion - there have been some articles in PC Magazines recently about home burnt CDR's only lasting 2-5 years before the data is unreadable - if this happened you would lose all of your pictures which would truely suck.

Any chance of MC being able to burn Photo CD's so that they can play in standard DVD players?

As far as I'm aware the CD has to be burnt a special way and not just as a DATA CD.

This would REALLY help promote MC's features as an media center rather than just audio features.

We will get around to photo CD's, I think.

Burning a DVD is another possibility.  MC can do that.

I do backup to an external drive.

I use a laptop so there is no place for an additional drive.

I guess I was wondering if I could take the large file off my drive and still have the information about it (including a thumbnail) in the MC library.

I'm still not clear if I can do that or not.
