Feature Request: Feedback on Rename, Move Copy Files
« on: February 23, 2016, 10:11:21 am »

I had originally posted this under the "Too Easy III" thread but was told it probably wasn't easy. I would like a progress bar, or some other kind of feedback, in the Action Window when Copying or Moving files. Currently it happens with no visual feedback, and if the file is large, it can temporarily show up as missing in the library, which is confusing. Sometimes I don't realize MC is working and I close it, which breaks my library.

It sounds like a good idea to me.

Also a "details" message/window showing what was actually done - what files where moved, changed, etc. (such as when moving a single TV episode, the tool will also move the "sidecar and associated jpg" files. So three files are moved).

Yes, this is a great suggestion.  The handheld sync dialog has progress bars and indication of what file is being worked on; that would be a wonderful addition to RM&C.

Because of this, I typically move files externally, using the OS, or a third party tool like rsync.  I only do this when I'm going across physical disks with large files or large groups of files.  On the same disk it's a non-issue as renames are nearly instant.

Once my external moves are done, I then use RM&C in Update mode to tell MC where the files have moved to.  I've been very successful with this method, but it requires a degree of care and attention to detail.  You can easily mess up the process if you're not careful.

Brian.

Showing progress in a pane like file imports, instead of the status bar, would be great.

Yes, please; this was my request in the Too Easy thread (some way to know what library operations were after the fact), but I'm guessing it wasn't Too Easy either ;D

I've asked for this myself as well, and got my own set of +1s on it:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=97980.0

My opinion is that this should be more generalized to any Tagging Operation that takes longer than X minutes to complete. The biggest problem is RMCF that moves files to different volumes, of course. But, I can't tell you how often I've tried to apply tagging changes to a big batch of files, and one of those files was in use, so they sit there forever with no way to cancel the operation (other than to force-quit MC) and no way to tell which (of perhaps 8k files) is stuck.

Ah I had not seen your thread (and the great article on RMCF- nice work). I totally agree with what you are saying here. *Any* tagging operation that take more than x number of seconds should bring up a progress indicator. RMCF is an amazing tool and is one of my favorite things about MC. But even as a somewhat advanced user I get tripped up by the lack of feedback.

I am currently doing a lot of retagging and RMCFs and I would love such an addition to the UI.

I really like this idea too!! Along with a smarter and/or more interactive import when files are shuffled around outside the current MC library.  (As you can have different MC setups on other PCs sharing the same music library...)
