TV setup for UK
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:11:00 pm »

Hi all

I live in the UK and I'd like to have a bash at setting up TV for MC. I've tried before and have given in as I found it too complicated! I got stuck at the EPG section.

I'd be very grateful if someone could give me some tips on the current best methods for setting up EPG and TV in general for UK users.

Best regards, Andrew

You should be able to setup TV for UK quite generically.  Please read the TV Setup Wiki.  Make sure you are using the latest build of MC21.

For UK, the EPG option "MC2XML" should work just fine.

If you had trouble with EPG a few days ago, it may be due to a temporary condition in which the EPG provider was not updating the data for UK.  I believe it should no longer be a problem (I just tried it, it gave me data from yesterday to Feb. 25).

thanks Yaobing

have got all the channels but not quite there with the EPG. Attached are some screen shots. I've put in my postcode with a space in the middle as we do in the UK.

When in the Scheduled guide reload page below I hit ok

I then get the error message below

I then get the loading guide data page which just hangs

what am I doing wrong?

Best regards, Andrew

Andrew,
When you click on one of the channels "click here to configure" do you get a list of EPG data to match to?

Did you enter your postal code correctly?  Please double-check.  Make sure there is a space between the two parts.  Try using capital letters.

have tried different formats for post codes JE26QQ, JE2 6QQ, je26qq and je2 6qq. Still getting the message saying that the guide data is not valid.

Any other stuff I could try?

I think your EPG loading profile is missing a piece of info.

Go to Tools > Options > Television and select "DVB-S" in the list box under Tuner Profiles.  Then click Configure button.

Go through the wizard and make sure you type in a name in the box for "Provider Token".  It is probably pre-filled with "DVB-S", which is fine, but you can probably type in something more specific, for example something that tells yourself which satellite this EPG is being setup for.

You can then do some cleaning up - go to C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 21\Settings\mc2xml\ folder, and delete files with extension .dat

When finished, run "Load Program Guide..." tool again.  On the same window as your first screenshot, you should see the Details of your EPG loading mode "MC2XML" looking like this: "country: GB, postal code: JE2 6QQ, data source: standard, provider token: TheTokenYouEntered".

I was getting on fine but I noticed I was missing a couple of  channels so I did a reset of all the TV stuff and then a new scan.

The channel scan is now no longer finding any channels! I'm using all the same satalite settings as before.

Any ideas on what  is going in?

Many thanks, Andrew

To find additional channels, you should use Manage TV Channels tool and click Rescan button.  Resetting of TV channels should be used only in extreme situations.

I can not imagine how you can no longer scan for any channels if all parameters are the same.  You were able to watch existing channels, so the tuner and antenna should be in good order.

Try doing a scan once more, and capture a log file.  Email the log files to me.  yaobing at jriver dot com

If you can not scan any channels, you can try doing a library restore.  Your old channels were in the library, and thus can be restored from a backup.

Sorry for the delay.  I have been bogged down by other matters.

The log indicates that the tuner could not get a lock on all frequencies it tried.

The following are some (I cut the second half of the table due to forum posting limit) of the parameters that we use for the satellite that you were trying to scan channels for (28.2 degrees east, Eurobird):

Do you know if this table is correct?  It should be if you previously were able to get channels.

The signal locking status for each channel attempted was pretty bad:

Quote
Locked: 0, present: 0, strength: 18, quality: 5

Is your antenna dish aimed in the right direction?

Would it be possible to save the signal strength numbers (the data collected at time of scan) to the Manage Channels page, for each channel scanned?

If so, it might help user know how good or bad the channel signal is (what to expect), provide some history incase the channel stops working, and perhaps provide some guidance on aiming the antenna.

windows media centre has been a bit flaky recently. I've not always been able to view channels. Today its saying there's no signal.

The app that came with the tuner cards is however allowing me to view channels today okay.

We have had a lot of strong winds recently. I wonder is something has got damaged or moved?

I'll try and do a scan using the TVs tuner  and see if that picks up channels

If I can view channels okay on the app that came with the card shouldn't a scan on JRiver pick up channels?

Unbelievable. Dunno why but I just thought I'd check the cables going into the tuner cards - guess what? One of them had come out!

I have a dual tuner. So WMC was allowing me to view channels though the tuner device which was connected and I guess JRiver was searching for channels on the device who's cable had come out.

Thanks for suggesting it was a hardware issue. At least I didn't have to go a ladder to sort it.

Cheers guys - Channel guide filling up rapidly!!

Glad it was an easy fix.

If you have multiple Tuner Cards identified in JRiver, you can choose which one to use to scan with.
You would just click on the Tuner Card (in the TV Setup such as in step 5 here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=100319.msg695283#msg695283) to highlight the one you want to scan with. I'm not sure what this would look like if you had one physical Tuner card with two antenna connections (I assume it shows as two devices in JRiver).
