Proposal for new development model
« on: August 17, 2003, 03:16:57 pm »

Since the proposal for a new browsing scheme is obviously controversial, we've decided to modify how we're making decisions.  Beginning tomorrow, we'll mount high resolution web cams behind each developer.  We'll use these to build a web page where you can switch among different views by name, by type, by keys per minute, etc.

On each page, you'll see a snapshot of the developer, a full bio, number of lines produced in the last day, week, month, year, and lifetime.  You'll be able to register your opinion of the line of code just produced.  You'll see it in full context, of course, but with some vowels switched for security reasons.

Based on the cumulative vote for or against the line, it will be kept or omitted from the next release.

In case of a tie, we'll ask Xen-uno to phone Lucy and ask whether it is day or night (1 or 0).

Any questions?

This simply isn't good enough.  We will need 24 hour video footage of all developers whether they're at work or not to properly determine the psychology of all decisions and coding practices.

Sounds like the XP development methodology.  Please finish 9.1 before starting XP.... (I've seen XP in action)

How about just pointing the webcam at the local Ball Games - we'll watch those - depending on if the team wins or loses we'll decide yes or no?

Or we could do it per bit - if they win it's a 1 - if they lose it's a 0?

Let's see... each character takes one byte of memory. There are 8 bits in a byte. So it would take 8 games to generate one character.

Given the average duration of a ball game (exactly what game are we talking about here? I'll assume Baseball)... and the number of games per season... average number of characters per line of code.... average number of lines of code for an upgrade of MC...

It would take approximately 131,249,082,374,239,873.324 years to write MC 10 using your proposal, Nila.

Do we get to vote on who's fired first?  ;D

What about moving the whole company in new premises? Here is a suggestion:

wahoo - sounds good to me.

VERY feasible and would totally eliminate any programming errors.

We could bribe teams to win depending on if we wanted it to be a 1 or a 0.

When do we start?

This is a great idea, JimH, but we all know that the best motivation for positive performance is the desire to avoid pain.  Thus, I suggest the penalty for 10 bad (read: unapproved) lines of code to be an application of a hammer to the non-dominant hand, as seen in the movie Casino.

This is not cruel enough. What about making MMJB the default media player on the computer of those whose coding is not up to the task?

Now that's just pure EVIL!!

I used that player for around 30 mins then uninstalled it, deleted it and hated it.

Talk about bad and unclear GUI's - YUCK!!

I found a jukebox after that called Siren I think it was - it was great until the company stopped making it. Then I found MC:)

I want to be able to view different developers in different panes. Or perhaps a tree view of JRiver staff.

I'm opposed.  We need more control than that.

Instead of voting on the code how about letting us write it: committeeware!

OR

For too many unapproved lines of code I'd suggest firing up electrodes attached to the developer's...you get the idea. ;)

How about using a similar system for forum users...
They can only log in (and stay logged) when they wear their electrodes. If they write more than ten lines of stuff that's off topic, thoughtless, half done, useless, greedy or rude, they get a nice shock...

Ah, now getting closer to the probably real essentials of this thread:

Masochism and software development - what do they have in common...

Been there, forced to do that.  Quality was lower, documentaiton was lower, design was worse, no thought to the future, slam bam get it out.   (some parts make sense, but they always did make sense, it didn't take XP to give us the idea).

Sure, this is funny now, but what happens when FOX announces this concept in the Fall? :P
