DSP studio configuration in DLNA servers
« on: May 13, 2016, 10:00:44 pm »

HI,

Using MC21 as DLNA server, I could not set up re-sampling of PCM format via DSP studio in DLNA servers window.
I want to change only sampling frequency of PCM formats, for example, 44.1kHz→176.4kHz, 48kHz→192kHz, and DSD format is not changed.

Could you tell me how to set up DSP studio in DLNA servers,
or Is this specification of MC21 ?

Hi,

The additional description is as shown in the following figures.
DSP configuration is not reflected to UPnP renderer (MoOde player).

Is this specifications, or Bug?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, this is a known bug. I'm trying to achieve exactly the same thing. My DLNA renderer only supports 24/48 so I want to downsample in JRiver.

I don't think Bob said that it was a bug.  It's that the DSP over DLNA setting change must be made on the server, not on the renderer.

While not technically a "bug," it is a known design flaw.

It's that the DSP over DLNA setting change must be made on the server, not on the renderer.

This has nothing to do with the issue or what the OP is referring to.

The heart of the issue is that DSP over DLNA was a "bolted-on" feature that was never truly integrated into the server settings and no additional development has been done on it.  The old Media Network settings for Sample Rate (directly above DSP Studio in the first image) are all that are used.  Not sure if it is all the renderer gets or if it over-rides DSP Studio.  I have no idea how the code is written, but that is the end result.

So, you can set a flat Sample Rate to upsample ALL material if your renderer will support it or just send the Sample Rate "same as source"; however, you can't set varying Sample Rates based on the original Sample Rate of the inputted material.

I would love to see DSP over DLNA development flushed out for use on stand alone renderers.  For a work around though, if you are running MoOde Audio Player on a Rasberry Pi, you may want to look into running an instance of MC as a client instead:  http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=95578.0  You could then send original format to the Pi and have the Pi client do the Sample Rate changes.  Not sure how much DSP on the client side would cause the Pi to stutter though, but mwillems could probably tell you.

++

To be very specific: You can only use DSP on DLNA if you do not change the sample rate, or the bit depth, or the channel count.

Harrumph !!

Hi Jim - at the end of the day, the DLNA Server does not function as the GUI gives the impression it should.

To quote one of the other contributors to this discussion....
"however, you can't set varying Sample Rates based on the original Sample Rate of the inputted material."

This is exactly what I need it to do. As an ex programmer of user interfaces, I do not understand why we are given selection options in the tool which are known not to work. Why not just hide them to avoid disappointment?

I'm not defending how it works.  I'm just telling you what the solution is.

Thanks Jim. I have been trying to apply this change on the server. What is the solution?

Thanks Jim. I have been trying to apply this change on the server. What is the solution?

Two things:

1) You can only use DSP on DLNA on the fly transcoding, if you do not change the sample rate, or the bit depth, or the channel count.

2) If you want to apply DSP on tracks to push via DLNA, then do the DSP offline, save it to a new file, and then push that file via DLNA in "original" format.

Thanks. I want to change sample rate on the fly, so for me it's no good. Still think they should hide this option, as it doesn't work.

I'm being offered a discounted upgrade to MC 22, but won't bother given that I'm not hearing anything to suggest that this will work in 22.

Thanks all for trying to help me!

Hello, everyone. Thank you for your reply.
I hope MC DLNA server can evolve, and become more comfortable to use !

Thanks.
