MC copies (as in via F6 - Rename, Move & Copy) files in their original format. It doesn't have a convert function as part of F6.

MC does have a Convert Format function. To understand the range of formats to convert to that are on offer, find yourself a video file in Standard View and:
Right Click / Context > Library Tools > Convert Format
This brings up the Convert Format dialogue in the bottom left hand corner of the GUI. You can review the extensive range of formats via the drop down box.

As a side note, be aware of the option to convert video to audio only. This can be quite handy at times.
