Why the Lock on the Mensa Thread?
« on: August 06, 2003, 04:32:07 pm »

JimH,

I'm just wondering what was wrong with the tone or direction of the Mensa thread?

I was thinking about that...  but that seems a little unfair - this is, after all, quite a "community".  It might seem strange, but I place value in the opinions of others (the strangers that they are) in the MC family!

Well, it'd be nice to get some groundrules then...

Or maybe....IQ. Need I say more?

PS-

Have a funny story about a member of Mensa.

Used to work for a guy that built homes and also did some remodel work. One week we went back to a house that was owned by a Mensa member. Did our business as usual. Next to last day I'm walking up the steps from the basement and hear a noise. Hmmm. Smoke alarm beeping about every ten seconds or so.

I tell Mr. Mensa, 'Your smoke alarm needs new batteries.'

His reply: Couldn't be. That thing is only a few few months old. Must be something else.

ME: Shrug.

Last day: Mr. Mensa - 'You know what?'

ME: what..

Mr. Mensa: 'Had to replace the batteries in the smoke alarm.

Me: 'Go figure...'

hehehe - What a guy. Just couldn't believe that someone was smart enough to program a smoke alarm to beep when the batteries were low. Go figure...

There are organizations for everything. We don't have to understand them for there to be validity.

Even considering the use of the "I" word, it seems incongruous to close the thread. But I don't have to understand it for it to have validity.

I suppose this one will close, too.

No. Flog each other with tidbits of useless stories about smoke alarms.

Neither do I...  but it would seem better to avoid starting a thread that will get locked in the first place.

sraymond,
We get off-topic all of the time. The threads are not usually closed unless they get offensive or out of hand in some way. Sometimes not even then.

Maybe we're trying to be cautious without knowing what to be cautious of.

What's the "I" word?  I couldn't find one in the original thread.

In a galaxy far far away....

Old forum users here still remember an individual with a nick that started with IQ.

Discretion is the better part of valor from here. But suffice it to say, him and Jim didn't really see eye to eye.

Bingo.  OT threads can be fun.  That one wasn't.

So sometimes they will live, but sometimes they won't.

I'm trying to help provide a balance between entertainment and work.  This forum is the main way we communicate with customers.  Some clutter is OK, even entertaining.  Some isn't.

I'll close this one soon.

I seem to remember that nick...

Funny thing is, one who identifies themself in social circles, and society at large, by their IQ is no better than someone who identifies themself by their beauty. We just call the latter 'shallow' while they are indeed one and the same. It's like apples and oranges: they are both fruit but just a little different.

IQ testing is completely superfluous in itself, let alone trying to align yourself with a high IQ organization. People who are truly that intelligent generally do not need to go join an organization to advertise it for them. Like Morpheus said, "There's a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path."

Just my thoughts. :)

aww - I have been silenced - but the voice of freedom shall never be silenced!!! lol

Mensa's just genious society - One thing I do know - it'll look GREAT on her resume!

Can hardly tell her shes not smart enough for a job when shes in a society purely for geniuses :)

I want that on mine - maybe its what I need to have a better chance of getting a job :)

This post may not make me very popular, but IMO Mensa is mostly a bunch of people sitting around proclaiming their genius. I was going to join just to beef up my college transcripts & professional resume to be competitive, but seriously, what is so impressive about Mensa? It's not that hard to get into. Their test is a bit on the easy side to be rating the top 2% of the world's IQ.  :-/  High IQ Society's tests are harder, and they only rate the top 5%. You see, the actual problem lies in the fact that there is no one standard for IQ testing. There are several tests available and each will give different results.

I liken it to the ridiculous TV show where they rated America's IQ.... c'mon.... Let's be real...

The average person wants to believe they are beautiful, intelligent, and accepted -- if not above average. These are ways of making individual groups of people feel good about themselves. Revel in the fact that you are intelligent enough to be a true individual. :)

digitalrogue,
Well said.  We are all above average.

And on that not, we will bid a farewell to Mensa.
