Channels don't change in Media Center- only with remote
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:50:27 am »

I'm new to JRiver- trying to find a WMC replacement so I can upgrade to Windows 10.  I love all I've seen thus far, but am having trouble controlling the set top box for the television.

I have the MCE IR blaster set and selected.  I've trained the remote and tested it, and it works fine.  The channels will change with the remote, so I think the mechanics of the MCE are correct.  However, when in Media center, if I select a channel from the program guide, the display will claim to be on the selected channel, yet the set top box doesn't change so I see the same channel, no matter what.  If I enter a number on my keyboard, Media center will claim to be changing the channel, yet the set top box gets no instruction to do so.  If I use the remote, it changes fine.

I started with the MC 21 download, and have now tried the MC 22 with the same result.  My tuner profile is set to look at Analog channel 3- the output from the set top box is there.  My channel settings all point to the MCE channel 2 which again works fine with the manual remote.  I keep thinking there's a setting I've missed, but can't find it.

Appreciate any help,

Did you train the remote control as part of STB channel setup (as shown in the attached image)?  The numbers entered through the MCE remote control should be equivalent to the numbers entered through the num-pad on a keyboard.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did train it, and have retried it a number of times.  After your post and retraining, I was able to elicit a response in the test mode, but only from the "Enter" key.  That causes the box to display on the screen the current channel.  None of the numbers would cause a response, so I cannot change channels.

I have two remotes of the same type (two separate set top boxes) and tried training with each with the same result.  Once I got the "enter" key response, I tried re-training a single number without any help.  Is there any way to manually enter whatever is being learned?

My tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 which also has an IR blaster and I have used it successfully with Windows Media Center.  I don't see that show up as an option for JRiver when I go through the setup, but if that's a possibility I can explore that option too.

Appreciate any help.

Playing around, I found Winlirc and created a config.cf file from my STB remote.  I don't know what to do with it as the output is very different from the settings.ini information I found from Media Center.  I didn't know if that information might be helpful in some manual setting.  Just trying to help...

OK, figured it out, but think there's a bug.  Doing a lot of searching, I found this exchange

"imeric:
Hi Yaobing,

Here is what I did...
I unplugged the Blaster from port 1 and connected it to port 2, I tried it during normal usage and guess what...It worked!!!

Then I went back in the setup page to see if it works when connected to port 2 and it doesn't.

So I guess port 1 and 2 are reversed between the JRiver setup and in "Working mode" ?

I also confirm that port 1 is the one selected during my setup.

So now in my case to get it to work properly is to set it all up when connected to port 1 and re-connect to port 2 for normal usage....

Hey...We're going somewhere good stuff!!!  Thx!!!

Yaobing:
I am glad we have finally nailed this one.

Some (I think older) devices have ports opposite to other (newer) ones."

So, I did switch the port on the MCE from 2 to 1.   The hardware is clearly marked 2, and the selection in the setup is clearly 2, but it didn't work there.  I switched the hardware side to 1 and now it is better.  From the program guide and the keyboard, I can now change the tuner, so I will next test the recording features.  Having switched the port however, the STB remote no longer works.  That doesn't matter to me, but it's a quirk.

It's curious that I could get a response from the "enter" key before switching the port.  Go figure...

I'm interested in any thoughts for what happened, but I think I'm good at the moment.  If the recording setup works well, I'll be buying before the weekend...
