Windows Sound
« on: November 24, 2015, 01:23:55 am »

I have my audio set to Wasapi using my Onkyo on 5.1 but somehow windows sound settings even though showing the Onkyo as default  keeps reverting back to two channel stereo.
Is there something else I am missing?

Check DSP settings?  Make sure you are not down mixing or have it set to 2 channels?

I did quick Google on this topic - and you are not the only one with this problem.
This link explains what the cause of the problem is, and "possibly" how to fix it: http://superuser.com/questions/695778/preventing-windows-7-from-reverting-to-stereo

Short version - a couple of things to try:
1) Turn on AVR first, then turn on Computer - so computer sees that HDMI is connected to a 5.1 capable player.
2) Try turning OFF "HDMI Control" in your Onkyo (if you have that option).
3) buy/install "the 3D Fury" or "Doctor HDMI"  to fool your computer into always seeing that the HDMI is connected to a 5.1 channel capable sound device.

There are a lot of other webpages discussing the same issue - so there may be a better/different solution. Just Google something like "Windows Sound defaults to 2 channel" or "Windows Sound defaults to Stereo" (or similar phrase) and you will get a lot of hits.

You got that right.  HDMI handshake issues on audio are a constant, annoying problem due to Windows, not JR.  The symptoms are just like you describe.

The best, sure fire solution is a "spoofer."  I use a Gefen HDMI detective, myself.  It saves a lot of grief and tearing your hair out, if you have any left.

Hi,
If I have Open device for exclusive access selected does it matter if windows keeps reverting back to 2 channel?
