Yesterday I encountered a problem with my volume.  I waited till today thinking the new build might fix it.  I've asked around and no one else has this problem.

I was playing a song and when it started playing the next song, my volume decreased big time.  I had to turn my speakers up to half way to hear it.  Thinking it might be my sound card, I tried other programs.  Almost blew my eardrums!  Everything else played normal.  So it did this for a while and then all of a sudden went back to normal.  Hoorah!  Then after like two songs it went down again and has been like that ever since.  Can anyone help me?

Have you analyzed all or only some of your music files (Tools/More Tools/Analyze Audio)? Do you have Replay Gain enabled in the DSP Studio (Player/Player Options/DSP Studio)?

If you have Replay Gain turned on and only some of your files are analyzed, this would cause jumps in volume.

If you have analyzed your files, but don't have Replay Gain turned on, this will cause jumps in volume.

If you haven't analyzed your files and you don't have Replay Gain turned on, then the problem is just the different music was recorded at different volumes. Some will be louder, some will be softer. I would suggest analyzing your files and turning on Replay Gain. This will pretty much make all your files sound approximately the same volume.

I did analyze my files.  But why does this cause the volume of each to go down?  Is there any way to reverse it so that I can go back to normal volume?

I have had a weird volume thing too, but assume it to be something in my system . . . .

upon openning Internet Explorer the volume increased about 6db.

This has occurred several times, and has also occurred when accessing a CD-Rom drive as well as IE.

This is how Replay Gain works. The problem with doing the opposite is that it would make some files too loud and would cause clipping and distortion.

Is there any way to reverse it so that I can go back to normal volume?

If you don't want to use Replay Gain at all, just disable it in the DSP Studio. If you want to use it, but want the volume level to be louder, go to the Replay Gain DSP, and in the Adjustment box choose Fixed from the drop down menu. I have mine set a +6.0 dB. You can try different settings to see what sounds good to you.

Mine is still jumping significantly louder when I access a web page in Internet Explorer, not everytime but enough to get my attention and become annoying . . .
partcularly at 2:00 am
