Using OS Sierra 10.12.3 on late 2016 MacBook Pro w Touchbar.  When using MC22, every 1-3 minutes, the external sound output (Lightning 3/USB adapter to PS Audio Sprout) pauses and goes to laptop speaker output for about five seconds, then resumes to the  usb/dac output and external speakers .  Anyone have any ideas?

Try selecting the USB DAC directly from MC's setup:

Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device > (select here)

Do NOT use the "default (core audio)" device.  Select the USB DAC by name.

Save, then restart MC and try again.

Ok, that seems to stop the intermittent switching to the laptop speakers and back.  But now, usually about five to six minutes in, the playing of the song just stops.  I have to manually press stop on the MC controls and restart the song.

Sounds like you have a problem with your USB DAC.  If you can power cycle the DAC, do that.  If not, I would replace the USB cable.  Or contact your DAC vendor for advice.  This is not normal at all with MC for Mac.

Thanks Brian for your insight and quick responses.  It looks like it's the USB to Lightning adapter as the culprit.  I have a non powered multi adapter (3 USB and Ethernet) that I've been using for the USB DAC connection.  If I plug the USB DAC directly into the computer via a single USB/lightning adapter, I no longer have the issue.  Overall, I'm finding the connections on the new MacBook w Touchbar to be a bit finicky in different circumstances and having to adjust, but either way it looks like the multi adapter won't work for the DAC in this case.
