Image doing weird things
« on: February 26, 2017, 01:37:32 pm »

In the last months I have been experiencing a weird image issue: when I play a movie, the left side of the image seems to shake from time to time, like a wave passes (can't explain in a better way). This covers only the left 1/4 of the image, last for about a second and then everything backs to normal, after some time (ramdomly) situation happens again. Never lost image, just like if you "shake" the image .... maybe some of you experience same situation. Can you help me please?

What version of MC are you using?

Try toggling the setting for hardware acceleration in MC's video settings.

This is almost certainly a hardware or driver issue.

Done that and problem remains. I upgraded to a dual channel memory about 2 months, do you think that would the reason?, is the only part of my hardware that I change recently but never before this happens to me doesn't matter if I check hardware acelleration or not. Just reinstalled MC and nothing change

Try switching between Red October Standard and HQ in video options.

Did you check the cable connections?  Are they tight?  Did you try another cable?

Thanks JIMH, yes, I connect my computer using displayport but yesterday unplugged and return to the usual HDMI with no luck. The problem persist. Honestly don't know what else to do, I have been using JRiver for several years and never had a problem before and looks like this is not a typical one for sure.

Looks like issue has been solved. Just found that one of the graphic parameters was wrong: I have 59i in the refresh rate, but as soon as I changed to 59p everything return back to normal.
thanks to all for the help

JUST FOUND THE PROBLEM: SUBTITLES.  I use to watch movies using (spanish) subtitles. As soon as I turn subtitles off, image is perfect again, not even one weird issue in a whole movie. Maybe this is why most of the users can't see this issue.
Now that I found the problem, would you please let me know how can be solved? ... thanks

within subtitles, just found that if I change the font or the color, the program does not hold the new changes and return back to the original, is this the normal behavior?

Honestly don't understand why I didn't receive any input form the personal of JRiver about this issue. I have been posting more information about this problem trying to help to narrow where the issue would be and none of you give me any ideas or even post something ... seems like you jump one or two times at the beginning of the thread and that's all. I have been a JRiver subscriber for several years now and never happens this to me. All that I want is to find a solution to my problem ... would you help please?

Both Matt and I work for JRiver.  It's not clear what your problem is, but it isn't common.

Thanks JIMH, if is not clear just ask and I will try to explain in the best possible way.  Will try to do it better this time:
I found that when I use subtittles, in the far left side of the screen appears from time to time like the image turns big squares (like pixelation)  and then back to normal, this problem covers the very far side of the screen only (always same place). this issue shows in a non regular basis (maybe 2 or 3 times per minute) but only when subtitles are in the screen. If I turn off the subtitles picture is perfect.
Trying several options found that if I change the size or the color of the subtitles letters the program doesn't hold the option and always return to 100% and the original font letter.
Finally I installed KODI and with that program susbtitles works perfect.
If more clarifications is need it, please ask.
thanks for your help

Did you try both Red October Standard and Red October HQ?
You can find the option to switch between them under Video -> Video Mode

They both use entirely different ways to render subtitles, so both exhibiting the same issue would be quite confusing, and possibly point at something else.

You could also try updating the drivers for your video card, just to be sure.

Hendrik, first of all, thanks for your reply.
In the past the results were the same, doesn't matter if I use Standard or HQ. Today, After install and reinstall several times the program, now looks like with HQ issue is gone, but is still there with standard. What is not normal is that I have been using JRiver for several years and never had an issue, doesn't matter what I use and now, out from nowere this problem appears.

I get the same thing anytime I have subtitles on using RO standard. It doesn't happen with HQ.
It has been happening since at least August.
I use a surface 4 i5 with Intel HD Graphics 520. Windows, drivers, and MC are up to date.

RO Standard uses a Microsoft component for rendering the video and the subtitles, so I'm not sure how much we can influence it. Might have been an issue with a driver update or a Windows update.
If RO HQ works for you, I would recommend to just use that. If performance of ROHQ is an issue, it can be configured to run faster, but it requires a bit of advanced knowledge to do that (we have an expert guide on the wiki for that).

Thanks syndromeofadown for your comment, I'm glad that I'm not alone with this issue, after several posts information starts to flow and that's the idea for me and others in the future that search for this kind of issue (same way as I use to solve my problems with JRiver).
Hendrik, thanks for your input.
Thanks

Hendrik, why not you try subtitles with Standard?, if technicians find the same problem, I'm sure they can find a solution and we as users, can use both Red October standard and HQ.

My up to date graphics driver is from last June. I managed to update to a more recent one from this March which improved the described issue significantly. It is now almost unnoticeable. It's very a convoluted process to do this on a Surface because Microsoft won't allow you to just update the driver.

The problem is completely fixed when I use RO.
Since I have a low powered PC I changed the following setting.
In madVR settings I changed image upscaling to "Bilinear" done by GPU, and chroma upscaling to "Bilinear" done by GPU.
I'm no expert so there could be better options to use, but it has been working fine for me.
