Help with trial version
« on: July 06, 2003, 04:04:11 pm »

Hi I am a verison 7 license holder and had tried Media Center in its early beta days...

anyhow, I just got an ipod and want to give an updated Media Center a ride before I decide to buy it (want to see how easy it is to sync with ipod)

When I install Media Center, I get a message telling me my trial has ended.  I tried the beta and did not realize that the beta would affect my ability to try the finished product.

IS there areway I can get a new 30 day trial period?  Can you post here how, or email me how?

I may want to buy Media Center, but wont think about it until I know I will be happy with ipod support

thanks!

Are you really serious?

That is crazy.  I like Media Center but not that much.  I tried the beta as i thought it was exciting to watch the product in development.

Initially, I thought I had no reason to upgrade.  However, now I want to be able to make playlists easily with smarlists and sync  them with my ipod

Please please help

I dont want to use musicmatch or buy xplay but feel like I may be forced to do so.

If you tried the Beta, you did try Media Center.

Yes, but I did not have an Ipod then.  If Media Center is as hard to use with an Ipod as (the horrible) musicmatch, I am not interested.

The beta I used was an intiail one, very buggy.

Im not going to debate if I tried Media Center.. that isnt my question.

All I am saying is that
1) I am a potential customer who may spend $40

but if you want my business, I need to try the product to see if it can be used in the way I want.

You're talking to other users, not to JRiver.  I work for JRiver.

You might want to take a look at what people say in the iPod support thread here or over at ipodlounge.com where there is an MC board.

You could try MC on another PC or just buy it.  It works.

Just for future builds - I agree that doing the beta testing shouldn't effect your ability to test the final product.

I think the final product should have the 30 days reset from beta's so that all users get a chance to test the final rock solid product before buying.

It doesn't really effect anything except giving them a chance to decide if they want it or not. Especially seeing as they may have had bad experiences with the Beta's.

Just saying for future builds..... possible?

and open up 8 months of development time of no sales

I don't think any business can underwrite that.

It wouldn't work like that - during the whole of the beta period they'd only get 30 days trial.

If they wanted to carry on using it during the beta period they'd have to pay.

If they on the other hand decided they couldn't handle the beta, too many bugs or whatever so stopped using it. They could then wait till the final before seeing if it was then up to scratch before buying.

Most people who were happy during the beta would pay for it so they could still get it during the beta period.
The only ones who would not want to keep using it during the beta period would be those who were unhappy.
Then letting them try the final product would hopefully convince them MC had changed a LOT during it's beta and was now worth the money.

Why not have a 30 day trial period that started with the first release of a beta.

And then 30 days later, whichever build was released would detect that other trial and disable it, but start a new 30 day trial.

Repeat until release.

OR

Set a date in the beta so that 30 days after its release, it no longer functions. It just pops up a message saying that the beta has expired and directs you to where you can download the newest build.

Because quite honestly, it's very easy for somebody to check out a beta early on, decide they're not ready to deal with all the bugs, but then a few months down the road decide to check it out now that it's done. But now they can't because the trial is up.

I can understand wanting the trial to be active during the beta stage. Otherwise somebody could find a beta that works for them and just keep it forever. But to have a trial stick with you throughout a beta period doesn't make much sense to me.

At least let the full version begin its own trial period.

No. I say "Let's decide NOW!!!"

Really, everybody makes such good points, it's hard to decide WHAT to think.

I tried to be wishy-washy once but I wasn't sure if I should be or not ...

A2hoo,

OK, I'm going to give a REAL answer.

If you liked the Beta except are not sure if it works on IPOD, search for IPOD here in the forum --- there's quite a bit of discussion on it. If you're not turned off by other people's experiences, know that the support here is as good as you can get. The answers are to you and are about your particular problem, not a standard answer looked up in the tech support manual. If you're having unique problems, both the JRiver staff and the members will try to help. A lot of members have IPODs. Some of the staff have IPODs. The new version is INTENDED to work with IPODs. They will do everything they can to GET it to work with YOUR IPOD.

You got a lot of flip answers because sometimes people try to trick their way into another 30 day trial. It looks as though you might actually have a legitimate problem with said trial. But, then again, I've been fooled before.

debate ended

i bought media center yesterday after going to ipodlounge

and i love it

Version 9.1 is amazing

I agree that future betas should not affect the ability to preview the final product

We beta test for our benefit but also to help the product grow.  I dont think people should be penalized for playing with the beta and help develop it.
