MC23 for audiophiles
« on: May 10, 2017, 12:41:57 am »

Hello

I would like to see if there are any plans to invest into audiophile community here - pure two channel stereo

I personally raised few things in the past, like reworked DSD /PCM/up-down sample dialog, support of Roon, Tidal.

I don't know if you guys can also better integrate Dirac, it doesn't work stable for me as VST3

I would like to work with Web interface as I did many years with Squeeze
But I have to work via VNC connected remotely. And Gizmo is ....

I did not see anything significant for me, so I stayed with MC21

Support for Roon and Tidal likely won't happen. The latter has been discussed extensively over the last few years (a search of the forums should cover why).

Hi guys,

I would love some ability of MC to pull together the latest news (eg tour dates, today-in-history, manual config of RSS feeds, etc) from various sources like Wikipedia, Bandsintown, etc. vis-a-vis my listening habits, and present that info as one of its views.  I'm not sure it's an audiophile feature as much as it's a music aficionado feature.

Cheers,
Doug

Hi

MC22 is actually super audiophile already, and multichannel surround. Nothing to work on there.
DSD is useless as its low quality compared to PCM.

Upsampling with SOX and parameter would be nice (44.1kHz CD to 96kHz or 88kHz), to get rid of DAC internal LPF.
The SOX LPF however should be configurable, the onyl request I see for use.

Downsampling: why? No use.

Tidal, Spotify, Internet Radio easier integration why not, but not very important

There are other interests and opinions.

Many of us who have lots of DSD files would disagree with this.

Agreed.

I can think of several and, until DiracLive or another EQ can work in DSD, PCM downsampling is needed.

Why not!

[Tidal, etc]
Why not!
They come and go like the wind.

They often offer a limited or no interface.

We pay for the work, they get the revenue.

Not quite true. We pay for Your work by buying MCxx and the upgrades (which I have purchased already willingly).
It would be just as ridiculous to complain about not earning money by playing back DVDs with JRiver.
Such integrations (and there are a few out there) had been implemented by some volunteers e.g. for Kodi, so the efforts seems limited or reasonable.

While a true audiophile WDM solution should give a general solution in theory, but I think both on the native playback applications (Tidal) and in the WDM SQ is still some remaining headroom for SQ optimization. Therefore is an integration still of interest (besides of further improving on WDM SQ.)

FYI, Tidal integration was attempted a few years back, but it didn't work out. That's why it's not likely to happen (again a search of the forums gives the full backstory).

Though, I *do* have an idea of "semi integration" by using MC's built-in Chromium engine in a tab to display the Tidal website and using the WDM driver for playback. But it's highly complicated. Who knows, you might be able to get it working right now, not sure since I don't use Tidal. Otherwise from what I've read using the Tidal app (with WASAPI exclusive mode turned off in the app to avoid a BSOD) with MC's WDM driver works.

Tidal's future isn't certain. There's been rumors for a good while about the losses the company has had. There's a general topic about that kind of thing too.

We did it, had it working, and then they demanded control of the UI, so we bowed out.

Hi

Not quite how you would incorporate Roon, it effectively a direct competitor of MC !!

It may look sexy with all its info but as a navigation and library manager it doesn't hold a candle to MC. I admit I was VERY tempted but when I tried to use it (I had a 60 day trial) I found myself frustrated and never left MC as my primary music source.

I really did persevere as I was drawn by graphics and info but at the end of the day finding my favourite version of Beethoven's X proved quite difficult.

You get the view they give you, none of the customisable views that MC gives you. Add to that's its not DLNA compatible and only a few DACS work with its "Roon Ready" transport.

If anyone wants more details of my evaluation and my findings maybe mail me rather than bog down the forum.

I am extremely happy with Dirac integration via VST plugin using Win7 and JR22.  For me, it is more stable and less fussy than prior to using VST.

I would include in the definition of an "audiophile" player the ability to play gapless audio sources (opera, Pink Floyd) without having to rely on the renderer having the SetNextAvTransportURI command built-in.  The most popular brand of "audiophile" universal player, Oppo, doesn't have that command.

Foobar has the ability to send the audio signal to the renderer as a continuous stream rather than as discrete files.  MC should as well.

I have a 64bit Dirac v1.2.0.8256.  Was the VST plugin something you downloaded separately?
And I presume the plugin is a 32bit DLL that can connect to 64bit Dirac?

It is still a Beta, but totally stable, in my view.  So, you have to request it from Dirac.

I would like an automated way to input the filter coefficients derived from Room EQ Wizard (REW) into MC's DSP filter.

It would also be nice to the ability to have multiple filter configurations saved, with the ability to switch between the different active DSP filters with a simple click.

Musicmax mentions sending the music file as a continuous stream as opposed to discrete files.  Could this concept be explained please?

JR offers to "play from memory" instead of from the HDD.  Is there any audible benefit to this?

So in terms of a pure audiophile program, MC22 (23) is the end of development. Is that correct? If not, what else can be expected?

Well, in the forum description for the JRiver Media Center 22 for Windows section it says development has ended, so very likely yes, it has ended.

if i'm not mistaken, i think what buckeyewalt wants is a confirmation that all features that JRiver considers as being "for the audiophile" are already implemented in mc (this was said several times iirc) and that versions >22 will not have any more "features for the audiophile".

MC22 is feature complete.  We don't know yet what MC23 will bring.

maybe some official statements here and there would be benefitial, so your users don't think of mc22 as feature complete with regard to "audiophile features" (read: if an audiophile feature makes sense it will be implemented in versions >22).

Hmm, yes, but there are still few things to improve.

We mentioned on the forum in few places that a rework of the PCM/DSD settings against DAC capabilities would be welcome.
There is a nice dialog for PCM, instead of patching around to support DSD, would be nicier to have DSD/../DSD512 handling in the same place

P.S. Oops.. I see I actually mentioned this above. I don't know why can't I explain myself :-(

I asked Oppo customer service about gapless playback and included their reply:

Quote from: ilikemusic
Does Oppo intend to support gapless playback over DLNA, i.e. enable SetNextAVtransportUri for the Oppo 105d? [...] My player has the latest firmware (10XEU-83-1226).

Quote from: Customer Service Oppo Digital
The ability to support DLNA/SMB with Gapless Playback is something that we have been investigating, but at this time it does not seem likely that we will be able to support this since Gapless Playback uses a buffer exploit which we have not been able to get working through the network.
