DSD upsampling issue in MC 22
« on: August 11, 2017, 11:24:35 am »

My first post here due to a recent perplexing experience.

I recently upgraded to MC 22 after using MC 19 for a very long time.

In MC 19 I output 4XDSD Native to my DAC and everything works perfectly.

I tried the same with MC 22, with all the settings the same (as far as I can tell) and for 4XDSD upsampling I am experiencing lots of stutter and distorted sound.

Why would this be?  Did the upsampling algorithm change so much between 19 and 22 that it requires much more resource-wise from the hardware?

Using MC 22, I can upsample PCM files to higher rates and to DSD64 (only) without the aforementioned stuttering and distortions.

Are the files local?  Or on a NAS?

The network could be a bottleneck.  Please try a local file.

I appreciate the troubleshooting.  I will try later this evening.

I am still curious why the exact same file (stored on the NAS) would work on 19 flawlessly but not on 22.

No change to OS i presume. Long shots - Are the ASIO buffer settings the same? Does changing them help? Take a look at Audio Path and see if anything is different between 19 and 22. Does DoP work at 4X, if your DAC also accepts DoP for 4X?

Thank you dtc!
The ASIO buffer settings on both MC19 and MC22 was set to 100 milliseconds and changing it to 500 milliseconds on MC22 solved the stuttering.

HOWEVER, why did MC19 work with 100 milliseconds and not so on MC23?

Maybe I shouldn't care after all as MC22 now works with the longer buffer.

Thanks again dtc, I appreciate the help.

Glad it works. Upscaling to 4X DSD is pretty taxing but a good system can do it. I do not know the details of  the buffering change - just glad it fixed the problem.  It is usually one of the first things to check for stuttering problems.
