Play Nice with Audible.com?
« on: June 19, 2003, 10:19:13 am »

Is it possible to make Audible.com's Audible Manager play nicely with MC9?

I like to download NPR's Morning Edition from Audible.com every day, and then upload that to my iPod.  I know that I can import the .aa file into MC9 and then upload to the iPod, but I'd prefer to simply upload directly using Audible Manager.  Before installing MC9, I could easily do that (and use EphPod to upload files), but now that doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

I'm using 9.0.180 with the 9.30 iPod plug-in, and now the 2.0.1 iPod Firmware.

Currently I can not use Audible Manager and MC9 to upload audiobooks and music, respectively.  Attempting to upload audiobooks using Audible Manager makes the iPod completely unreadable to MC9 (requiring a rebuilding of the database from the iPod).  Attempting to upload music from MC9 (after rebuilding the database)  erases the audiobooks.

I can manually import Audible.com .aa files into MC9, and play them inside MC9.  However, after coding their Genre and syncing them with the iPod, they refuse to play (selecting them does nothing).

Otherwise, I really like MC9, but this is a deal breaker for me.

I've been using ephpod for my iPod syncing http://www.ephpod.com

You might take a look at it.  It even has some nice features like being able to download weather/news automatically.

Klingler,

You should be able to import .aa files into MC and then send them to the iPod and have them play with no problem. If you are having problems with that, it is probably related to moving back and forth between Audible Manager and MC. Try reformatting with MC and then don't use Audible.

It is my understanding that similar problems exist between going back and forth between Ephpod and Audible. If your testing proves otherwise, let me know.

In regards to making Audible play nicely with MC, this is possible, but would be a lot of work and I am not sure what is really gained other than the ability to avoid importing files into MC which is at the core of how MC is designed.

Uploading via EphPod is apparently the best way to upload the Audible.com files.  I'm able to upload them using the "Add Songs" option, and then I simply have to remember NOT to save changes upon exiting.  If I follow those steps, then MC9 doesn't seem to have any problems continuing to access my iPod.

However, I'd really rather not have to use 3 different programs simply to be able control my iPod.  I still have to use Audible Manager to download the new audio books, then  EphPod to upload the files (and with both I have to be very careful not to "break" the iPod for MC 9).  Then I have to connect with MC 9 to update any smartlists, etc.

I guess my problem is that if EphPod can upload the Audible.com files, why can't MC 9?  In every other way, MC 9 seems more powerful than EphPod (as it should, since it's infinitely more expensive).

SteveG - I will look into your suggestions, but probably not until Monday as I'm about to go out of town.  Just wanted to let you know that I wasn't ignoring you!  Your comments seem accurate to me, but I definitely want to test them out.

Rob,

Lets talk more about this next week, but my suggestion is get your Audible files to your computer however you want, then import them into MC and transfer. I do not see the need to complicate this with Ephpod.
