If I exclude a process from Windows Defender, what to enter in Win 10:

 - Media Center 23
or
-  Media Center23.exe
or
- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23
or
- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23.exe

Full path, so either C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23 for folders and/or C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23.exe for the executables. Honestly I'd recommend excluding both the main Media Center 23 installation directory along with all .exe executable files in the Media Center 23 directory along with the .dll files.

You'll also want to exclude the %APPDATA%\J River folder.

I specifically allow these executables in Norton 360 Firewall:

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23\JRWeb.exe
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23\JRWorker.exe
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23\Media Center 23.exe

rather than the whole directory. In fact, Norton 360 creates the above rules for those programs based on my response to alerts when a new major version of MC is installed.


That seems to be enough for Norton 360, although I probably should allow:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 23\MC23.exe
C:\Windows\System32\MC23.exe

I actually don't exclude the above from the Norton 360 Virus Scanner. I never have. I also don't exclude media file locations from scans. MC works fine without those exclusions.

The above are all for the 64bit version of course. Windows Defender should work with the same settings, but excluding the whole Program and Data folders as Awesome Donkey suggests will also work. Shotgun versus sniper rifle approach.

I do the shotgun approach for ESET Nod32 also... (AV only as I cannot be bothered with their, or anyone else's, 'internet security'! I find them too intrusive.)

The whole Program Files (x86)\JRiver folder
The whole users\user\appdata\JRiver folder
The entire media drive where all the files in the library reside (10Tb)

It still monitors the files extracted by the installer, so if anything nasty got into there, it should be caught... maybe
