Hi. I’m completely new on this forum, so please forgive if my below questions already have been discussed.

I have the latest MC23 and I’m using it frequently together with downloaded DSD128 and DSD256-files. The latest file I downloaded, however, was a DSD128 with the extension “.dff”. Now, converting it to “.dsf” (still with the rate: DSD128) was no problem. But, checking some forums, I see threads, stating that converting files will always pass through PCM. I have no problems with that. This might be needed if converted to another format or rate. But how about converting DSD128 to DSD128, with .dsf as extension?

So my first question (or more ask for insurance) is: can it be guaranteed that a DSD128-file, which is converted to the same rate, from “.dff” to “.dsf”, will have the same untouched file-structure, just adding a header for the metadata?

Second question: is there an upper limit of the rate? Will a DSD256-file be converted the same way, with an untouched file-structure?

Just to add that I have no problems listen to DSD128 with “.dff” extension – it’s only so nice and convenient to have the metadata on the files.

All conversions in MC go through a PCM step, including DSD. In this case it'd be going DSD > PCM > DSD which is NOT a lossless conversion.

You'd have to use something like sacd_extract (or one of the frontends) or dff2dsf if you're using a Mac to convert/change .dff to .dsf without going through the lossy PCM conversion step in MC. For example, dff2dsf works by repackaging a .dff file to .dsf without actually re-encoding it, but that's a Mac-only app.

This was not the answer I was hoping for! 
Looks rather complicated, just for the benefit of putting in same metadata. Let’s hope that the dff2dsf-developers make a Windows-app, soon. Until then, I’ll better put back my old files with their .dff

Doubtful, as 2ManyRobots looks to be using only Mac OS. As far as I know, dff2dsf is the only application I'm aware of that can take a .dff file and repackage it to a .dsf without re-encoding anything.

If you ripped your .dff files from a SACD ISO, you still could use sacd_extract or one of the many frontend apps out there to extract .dsf files instead.

dff2dsf can be run from Windows. runs from the right click context menu.
need two downloads

extract to:DFF2DSF_context_menu_Win7_Win8_v110
place the signalyst dff2dsf.exe into that folder.
run AddContextMenuItem bat file

right click a dff file, there will be a DFF to DSF selection
let it run (or choose) the dff2dsf.bat file (if asked)

note: you may need to install a version of MS runtime. (see the Signalsyt page)

That's a completely different app called dff2dsf from a completely different developer, so I've never used it. I'm guessing it uses sacd_extract?
