JRiver seems to cause conflict with iMac sound settings
« on: June 11, 2018, 07:20:16 am »

Here's a problem that's been bothering me now and then since my iMac (High Sierra) was new: quite often I will get no sound from YouTube, nor from Spotify and iTunes sometimes refuses to plan at all. And clicking the speaker icon top right on my screen, a greyed out menu would tell me that the sound was turned off, and there was no way of clicking the option of turning it on. Still, JRiver WOULD play as normal.
Yesterday, I closed JRiver when this happened, and the other programs would work as normal. AND the options of the sound menu were no longer greyed out.

The output settings of my sound menu/sound card are set to Internal speakers (built in). In JRiver the Tools/Options/Audio are by default set to (Default) (Core Audio), but may be switched to Built-In Output (Core Audio). It will not help, though.

This is getting a bit tiresome, and any input for a final solution to this would be much welcome.
BTW, turning the computer off/on will help, but not for long. And it has been a problem with both version 23 and 24.

This is because the Core Audio output in MC has exclusive access to the output device by default, which is desirable for those users who want a bit-perfect output. You can disable exclusive access by going to the Tools menu and selecting Options. Once the Options window is open, select Audio on the left side and click on ...Device settings... and once that's open, uncheck this box highlighted with the red box and press OK.

Do note you will lose bit-perfect output by disabling exclusive access and system sounds (and browser sound, etc.) will all work while MC is playing back audio.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Ah! Thanks a lot! I'd been there without quite knowing what to do. Or what it meant. It is, off course, a pity with the sound loss, but on the other hand I don't have to turn the computer on/off every tenth time I'm using YouTube.
Thanks a lot. I have yet to find if it will work over time, but I have no reason to believe otherwise.

Or you could get another sound output device and route JRiver to that, and your internal audio through the normal channels.

For example, I use JRiver to output via USB to my DAC in my receiver.  It has zero effect on youtube videos or any such thing, except for the fact I have to switch inputs on my receiver because I have a mini jack to RCA cable leading from the default output to the receiver as well.
