I have had JRiver for many years and never had this problem.  Suddenly I notice that a few songs here and there will just stop in the middle and move on to the next song.  For a long time i just noticed it on one song but it just happened on another.  After some checking, it happens on all "dsf" files.  For years I have played theses same files with no problem.

I have a Bel canto Ref Stream that converts DSD to 24/176 if that makes any difference but either way these files have always worked and now none of them play through all the way.

please help.  this is not good

I just went back and checked Media Center 23 and on 23 I do not have this problem.  Dsf files play to completion on media center 23

Could you make one of the files available to matt at jriver dot com?  Then I could test and see if I could reproduce the problem.

Also, do you enable "bitstreaming" in Media Center or disable it?  In other words, does Media Center do the conversion to PCM 24/176 or does that happen on the DAC?  I couldn't reproduce it but I don't have that DAC.  Can you test on a different DAC?  Also, you could send us a log file which might show what's happening.

The REFStream definitely supports DSD (at least DSD64/2.8 MHz) so it shouldn't be converting to PCM unless you don't have DSD bitstreaming enabled.

He had said "I have a Bel canto Ref Stream that converts DSD to 24/176" so it sounds like the DAC is converting to PCM for some reason.

I just tried to confirm what I said before about converting.  I have a Bel Canto Ref Stream and a Bel canto DAC 2.5.  I remember John Stronzer from Bel Canto telling me that the Bel Canto turns DSD to 176.  He said that is the preferred way to listen to DSD according to him or something like that.

So here's the deal.  the Bel Canto 2.5 can display the the bit rate of the file.  On JRiver 23, if I play a DSD file, the Bel Canto says 176.4.  If I play a 24/192 file the Bel Canto reads 192.

If I do the same thing on Media center 24.  For the DSD file the Bel Canto reads 48.  If I play a 24/192 file it is also reading 48.  I did not change any settings.  Very odd.

Do you have bitstreaming in Media Center enabled?  It's possible you had it enabled in MC 23 but not in MC 24 so that's why you're seeing a difference.  It sounds like you want to bitstream DSD to the DAC and let it convert to PCM 24/176.  Or you can go into your DSP settings in Media Center and set it to do the conversion to PCM 24/176.

Under tools>audio>bitstreaming  in both 23 and 24 options "none"  is selected

so it's not just the DSD files that aren't correct.  24 is also reading my 192 and 96 files as 48.  It plays the 192 and 96 through to the end but my DAC2.5 reads them as 48.  the DSD files plays part way through and then cut off and skip to the next song.  How does this make sense when all worked on 23?

In DSP / Output Format, how does your setup compare between MC23 and 24?  This is where you select what sample rate to output.

If you're trying to play DSD, you need to use bitstreaming with the device directly connected.

What the Bel Canto device does then is up to it.

From the main menu, Tools / Options / Audio, then set "Zone to configure:" to your Bel Canto DAC.

Like Jim said, if you want to send the raw DSD data to the DAC, then set "Bitstreaming:" to "DSD" and you're done.

Alternatively, if you want to have Media Center convert from DSD to PCM, then leave bitstreaming at none and click "DSP & output format...".  Then checkmark the "Output Format" DSP in the lefthand box, and choose your sample rate preference in the 'Sample rate' box.

so I set zone to configure to Bel Canto I selected bit streaming to DSD.  right now I am playing a 24/192 file and my bel canto says its 44.1.  Before that I played a DSD file.  It showed up as 48.1 and cut off 3/4 of the way through.  24/ 96 files are reading as 48 also

Also, while I was doing this, I head a freeze up where I just get a loud digital skipping through my speakers where I have to shut everything down to stop it.  i used to regularly have this problem but it has been gone for a long time.  Bel canto said to buy an ID and play through that instead of my Mac.  having spent plenty of money already I opted out of that and it seemed that the digital skipping was a bug that you guys fixed.  But here it is back.

I have been back to using Media center 23 and everything there works.

Try rebooting.  If you have bitstreaming set, MC doesn't do anything with the file other than deliver it to the device.

I'm going to try borrowing a REFStream and do some testing.  I'll post when I get more info.
