Request - Minimize on Play MC24
« on: May 05, 2018, 05:18:47 pm »

Hi,
I would like to ask if it would be possible to have in the options,a settings a check box

to minimize on play. The reason I ask is I mainly play my ripped DSD collection, and I

like to load the full file to the memory/and when the file is loading the JRiver window freezes

until the file is loaded. So if the JRiver window, minimized as soon as I pressed play, then I could

continue to browse or work etc:,while the file loaded in the background and I could resume the window when needed.

I can achieve this if I am quick to minimize/although if not, then the window freezes,

It is not the PC as it is very HI End PC running the latest version of Windows 10 with more memory than I need.

So if this is at all possible it would be very appreciated,

Thank you

Just load a single track into memory (not decoded).
Though I would like to see things improved upon, currently any other setting for memory playback is an extreme waste of system resources and results in a significantly worse user experience.
Most of the time the "load full album into memory" option just freezes Media Center for several minutes and ends up playing the tracks directly from the disk anyway.

Oh, is that so? Although that is my preferred option, I haven't used it for a while since this option crashes on me when I change tracks "too often". But when it also does not actually "play from memory" it should be considered a bug, right?

EDIT: Does not crash anymore on initial tests: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,112686.0.html. However, can we get more information on RD James' comment?

It looks like they may have been some changes since I last tested this, but I haven't spent much time with it.
What I had seen before was that if the memory usage got over a certain amount, it cleared out the memory and started loading tracks directly from disk instead. Now it looks like that behavior may have been changed.

There was also an issue where, if you had more than an "album" of tracks in the playlist, it would just play directly from disk, but it looks like it may now fall back to loading a single track into memory instead - which is much better.

I'd really like to see the memory playback system revamped, but I'm happy that the "load full file (not decoded)" option was added and mostly works as expected.
I just wish there was a system for dynamically queuing multiple tracks in advance (without decoding) rather than the only option being 1 or 30 - and having to wait for all 30 tracks to be loaded into memory before playback can start.

Is it better to use the "Not decoded" option rather than to use the Decoded one?

I would say that it is. Memory usage is considerably smaller, and you have a small but constant amount of CPU usage during playback.

With the track decoded into memory, memory usage can be significant, and CPU usage will be very high at the start of playback (enough to cause stuttering audio on some systems) then no CPU usage until the next track.
There's absolutely no benefit to this, and enabling it means that MC is prone to interrupting other programs running on the system.

I know that on some systems that loading the full album to the memory would be strain on the system.
Although that is not the situation in my case,my system can handle it/the only issue I see is that for about
30 sec +  the JRiver GUI freezes, and I just have to wait/once it is loaded it is without fault.

And that is why I am requesting that the option to be able to set in the options  "to minimize on play"
Meaning in my mind, that when I press play and the album starts to load to the memory, the JRiver GUI
minimizes and the album loads in the background.Once it is in play,I can then restore the window to full screen
if I wish.
I think this is possible correct me if I am wrong, not a lot to ask/as in the last year there was not a lot of audio
related updates in MC23.I update every year and my main interest in JRiver is that it is the best "absolute" audiophile
player I have ever used/and I have tried them all.
So come on/ MATT or Jim H have a look at this / it will improve the function of JRiver as a Memory Player(and this is how I like to use JRiver
Thank You

Hi there

Using only WAV and DSF-files on an audio-only server my recommended setting is "load decoded file into memory" because it minimizes use of memory and cpu usage. This can easily be checked with the taskmgr. Tonally there is no difference.

Why not just set MC to a smaller size than the whole screen and then when it freezes you can still click on other items on the desktop for you to work on.

why not just wait for 30 seconds?   just relax for a while and enjoy the pleasant anticipation for your music???
