JRiver on QNAP
« on: September 03, 2018, 09:38:59 am »

Hi. I have got a QNAP NAS 251+ and the music station is working fine to my DAC. However, I have been told that the audio quality will be better if I install JRiver media server on the NAS. But I cannot see how to do this? There's a guide here https://download.qnap.com/QPKG/GUIDE/Jriver_ENG.pdf that talks about instaling the Media Centre on 'Hybriddesk Station' - but to do this I clearly need a version of the program to install. And I don't even know which platform my NAS runs on. (Is it Linux?) And then I found a thread on this site that said : On our Linux board,  please read the QNAP thread.  The version you need comes from the QNAP store and needs to be purchased from it.....But I can't find that thread. And I can't find JRiver in the app store I access from the QNAP. Can anyone help me please? Thank you.

These will help sum it up pretty well: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114219.msg790896.html#msg790896 and https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114270.msg790132.html#msg790132

Once upon a time, there was a MC for QNAP however some things happened and as a result it was dropped and so it's not supported anymore. The *only* way to run MC on a QNAP NAS right now, as far as I know, is through Docker.

Honestly though, if you're only using audio only (no video) it's probably easier to get a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ kit and install/flash Raspbian on a microSD card, and install the ARM version of MC24 for Linux on it and let it manage your library on the QNAP NAS.

Thank you for replying. That's hugely disappointing. But having invested a heap in my QNAP, I'm not sure what to do next.
Can I please ask three questions.
1. If I was using a synology NAS - could I get JRiver working?
2. What was the meaning of the * * around the word 'only'?
3. What is a docker exactly - and is that going to work - or is it going to be very troubled in practice!
Best and thank you...

1. Synology NASes aren't supported either, and after what happened with QNAP it's unlikely JRiver will invest time and money into developing a version of MC that can run on Synology NASes.
2. Meaning Docker is the only option for running MC on a QNAP NAS. If Synology supports Docker, you might be able to get MC working there too, not sure.
3. This is Docker: https://www.docker.com/ and here's an unofficial MC24 Docker image: https://hub.docker.com/r/jatzoo/jrivermc24/

Like I said above, if you're using audio only (and no video) it's probably easier to buy a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ kit and either install/flash Raspbian to a microSD card and install the ARM version of MC24 for Linux on it or buy a JRiver IdPi microSD card with MC already pre-installed which will work too. Then connect your NAS (either USB or over the network) to the Raspberry Pi and allow the MC running on it to manage your library.

You can use Docker as Awesome donkey suggested or install MC on a VM on the QNAP.

I've been running MC on a virtual Debian host on my TS-453mini for a year or so now and it works pretty well.

Thank you all for your replies. I can see that I am getting into very unfamiliar territory here. Is it possible please to point me to something that explains setting up a 'Virtual debian host'? (I imagine this will be simpler than the Docker solution from what I've just read. And I would imagine that the shorter path in the VM may deliver better sound quality than using the Raspberry.) NB My DAC can only work with UPNP - it can't work with Roon - does that impact the suggestions about VMs or Raspberry?) Thank you again for helping.

Does your QNAP have "Virtualization Station"? This is where you would build your VM (Virtual Machine).

Debian is just a flavour of Linux and is free to download. So follow the QNAP instructions in Virtualization Station on how to build a VM, and use Debian Linux as your virtual host. You then install MC24 for Linux onto that virtual Machine.

Having said that, it may be worth you doing some homework on the Docker approach. Once you get your head around it this should be even simpler, as the JRiver MC Docker image is already built and just needs to be configured. This method will also be less resource intensive than the VM. I will look to move to it myself when i get some spare time. To use Docker capability on the QNAP use "Container Station" in conjunction with the Docker locations already outlined here.

Cheers

Greetings.

Sorry for re-post this topic I found a little later and it more closely fits my question.

Please help me with one problem, I successfully installed MC24 in the docker on my QNAP NAS, but I can not access my music folders.
I have it on the path /share/CACHEDEV3_DATA/Music_Los
After trying to mount the directory
Code: [Select]
-v /share/CACHEDEV3_DATA/Music_Los:/Music: rwI see permission denied.
I tried to manually specify
Code: [Select]
-e USER_ID=0
-e GROUP_ID=0
But it did not help.
if I mount the entire Share folder to container, like this
Code: [Select]
-v /share:/share: rw \then the directory structure is visible in the MC, but the contents of the folders can not be viewed - permission denied.
What am I doing wrong?
Please help me, thank you!

I have jriver running in a container on qnap. Used jattzoo/jrivermc24:latest. Works with JRemote but can’t get it to output music through the qnap HDMI connection. Anybody know how to do that?

In short, no. No direct experience but I would expect that HD Station could feature as part of the answer. HD Station is the platform that Qnap uses to provide an HDMI driven GUI for the user, which includes sound. Qnap also have some models that are used for Karaoke. So, it all sounds doable. Let us know how you go and report back what you find.

I think this might be possible as I seem to remember this happening with a monitor with speakers I have attached via HDMI to my QNAP.

I don't think it did anything in particular, I wasn't actually trying to get sound out of the monitor but it just worked when i played a file.

My MC runs on a Debian VM on the QNAP.

How do you go about connecting the PI to QNAP?  I've managed to install J river on the PI but tried to add my qnap music library folder (by going to file menu, library, import in jriver) but there aren't any network drives there... only folders that are actually on the pi :(.  Sorry for the noob question

Is there an understandable instruction somewhere here what to do to set up Docker and JRiver 24 for Docker on a QNAP?

Unfortunately with the basic docker link provided and the JR24 link I don't get a clue.
