DSD to DSD conversion
« on: October 29, 2018, 05:22:31 am »

In DSP Studio I can define PCM to PCM conversion profiles. I would like to be able to do the same thing for DSD to DSD. I have a DAC that accepts DSD128. I am aware that I can turn DSD bit streaming off for DSD256 files and send them to the DAC as PCM352.8. But I would prefer to send them as DSD128.
Roon presents their conversion as a native DSD to DSD conversion, whatever that means in reality. I have attached a screenshop of their signal path for this case.
HQ Player also seems to directly convert DSD to DSD.
Any way this could be added to JRiver?

I'd honestly be surprised if they're doing a DSD to DSD conversion without a PCM conversion somewhere in the middle, e.g. DSD > PCM > DSD instead of DSD > DSD.

HQPlayer offers also conversion without going through PCM if I am not mistaken.

The Roon screen shot includes a Delta-Sigma Modulator reference, which would indicate that the conversion is not direct DSD to DSD, but rather goes through the modulator. That is not the same as going to standard PCM, but it is an intermediate state that is not pure DSD.

Likewise, HQPlayer uses a high sample rate, multi-bit delta-sigma modulator internally. My guess is that is uses it for DSD to DSD conversions also.

If either of these players were doing direct DSD to DSD conversion without a delta-sigma modulator, I would expect them to advertise it. I have not seen either one claim they do the conversion directly, but will gladly be corrected if they do the conversion without a delta-sigma intermediary. That intermediary step is, however, better than going to standard 24 bit PCM at some lower sample rate.

A user post does indicate, that your assumption is correct: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/dsd-to-dsd-conversion/52143
