dragyn, I've got the hibernate problem as well now
« on: May 22, 2003, 12:18:03 am »

I recently installed two Soundblaster Live! 5.1 cards in my MediaSUV's carputer (the built in soundcard did not have sufficient power to drive the headphones, so my kids kept complaining about low volume). The two new cards works very nicely, except one thing: Now I get what I think is the same problem you were complaining about. When I hibernate the PC while playing, everything goes well. But when it resumes, it won't play. No error messages, it just won't play. It seems to be stuck at the point where it stopped. When I resume I usually hear something that sounds like one sample from the track (almost like dropping the needle on a vinyl record (remember those?) and letting it bounce straight up again, with only that one touch). Is that your resume problem as well? On my carputer this happens to all zones. It's kind of confusing to my kids. I think I'll have to add a command to Girder on resume, to stop the playback and then start playback from the start of the track. Which is exactly what I wanted to avoid! I want it to resume where it stopped just like the CD player in the car. Especially on short stops this annoys the sh*t out of me!

It obviously is linked to either sound card or drivers since that's the only thing I have changed on it. I use the kX Project drivers to get independent zones from each card (two cards because only one of the outputs has the extra strength needed for good headphone sound). Do you have Live! cards, and what drivers are you using?

I figured it out to be ASIO. If I use WaveOut or Direct Sound, it doesn't happen. It's been that way since day one in MC. I kinda got used to it but it would be nice if it didn't do that.

Man, I don't even use ASIO! I use Direct Sound. I need to test it with wave out, then. Perhaps that will help. I only fear that changing the default soundcard (part of my playlist selection scheme) and then changing it back again will mess up the selections. Well, we'll se...  8)

I sympathize with you.

I have used both a SoundBlaster Live! & now an Audigy.

Both Hibernate & Suspend are very problematic. Am running Win XP & have had all kinds of problems with both.

Part of the problem is how Microsoft implements Hibernate & Suspend.  When you first do a clean install of Win XP there is no Hibernate or Suspend; your VIDEO card must support this feature before Win XP will show them in the Shut-down dialog.

I noticed that before I installed ATI A-I-W video card (was using the default Windows video drivers) that both Hibernate & Suspend were grayed out or did not show up at all.  After installing the A-I-W video card they then both worked...sort of.

The problem I initially had was when returning from either Hibernate or Suspend the sound would go to full volume regardless of where it was beforehand.  One day I installed ATI's latest video drivers & that problem went away.

Sooo... I think a lot of Hibernate & Suspend problems are really video card & driver related.

I suggest you update BOTH your audio & video drivers & take another look at the problem.

The problem I am currently having with Hibernate & Suspend is I just installed a GemTek PCI FM Radio tuner card which killed both Hibernate & Suspend for me.  They no longer show up at all as Shut-down options.

Oh well... I find the FM radio more useful anyway so I will simply live with this (for now).

I know of few people that are truly happy with Hibernate & Suspend.

As you can see, Microsoft still needs to do a lot of work before Hibernate & Suspend will have any reliability at all as currently any little thing will kill it or play havoc with it.
