OT - To xen-uno

I want to fry your avatar in butter and sear a steak on the grill to go with it.

I used to live a bit closer to the cities. One day I was mowing the lawn and seen something tan colored go flying out the chute. Hmmm, what was that? Stop, check it out. OMG!! The mighty morel had sprouted around an elm stump! Get the bucket and have at it. Nearly two pounds of spring-time treasure right in the front yard. And tasty, too!

Some days I wish I stilled lived in that house.  ;)

As a matter of fact, I do.

Go thru Watertown, up the hill towards Buffalo. First left at the...

Mach/Jim...

Here's the siblings...

The closest I've been this year is finding this image on the web (gorgeous picture, eh?). I tried printing these out (on a very expensive Oki color printer) and batter frying, but they lacked flavor. I went up to Mononna, Iowa (across the Miss from Praire Du Chen, WI) last weekend, but it was chilly and overcast (still considered too early for them up there). There just hasn't been enough consecutive hot days to bring them out.

Little bugger's are hard to find even when they are out.

Check it out...

They're getting smarter every year!

I went without last year...will it be two?

You know what, at first I thought maybe that fungus was one of the 'haluconogenic' variety ;)

So I got nosey......
from the name of the image above I got 'morel' and was still none the wiser, so I fired that into google, and this came out top of the pile...

Welcome to the Great Morel web site! These pages have been created for all the great passionate mushroom hunters of America. While The Great Morel doesn't lay claim to the official title of The Most Visited Mushroom Site on the Internet, we like to think its darn close and worth a look around. If you've come here looking for serious resourceful information, its here, you may just have to look hard to find it. If you're stopping by wondering "what the hell is this shroom'n crap all about?", rest assured you will more than likely have a better understanding when you are done.

So I learned a little already today and it's only 7:25 am!!!
Wonder if they get imported over here, the posts above and that site make them sound mouthwatering. I particularly liked the look of this little black fellow...

Very.

Not a bland button type at all.

Marko...

She's beautiful. On MC's scale I would rate it :):):):):). Morel's have a taste like no other. I usually egg and cracker bread them. They are most excellent sauteed as well.

Facsinating stuff.
I found some reports of extremely rare findings in North Wales, UK.
I found many, many tales of how good these things taste.
I learned about carconogenic "false" morels, and the extremely important need to actually cook the real deal.
I found a load of other pics including one being held
that was great for perspective.

Never realised that there was so much bandwidth dedicated to mushrooms!! Gathering your own seems frought(sp?) with danger too, unless you really know what you're looking for....
I love mushrooms, porcini's are among my faves, but I've never had the bottle to go get my own. Had too many horror stories drummed into me as a kid I guess ::)
