JRiver Buffering Problem

Hi All.

I'm facing this cumbersome behavior of JRiver forever.

Audio skipping during 384 audio playback.

I have a Luxman D-06 DAC using DSD working fine with high-res files.

This problems only happens with 384 audio.

I've recorded a video to show.

Hope this could be fixed.

The problem could be anywhere.  Try to narrow it down.  How is it connected?

Buffering normally means that MC can't get the music file fast enough to keep up.  This is most probably because something in between the computer and the source of the file is slow.  Are your music files on the disk inside the Mac?  Or on a server or network drive somewhere?

If I was forced to guess, I would say that your files are on a network server and your network is wireless and one or both ends of the network don't have a good connection.  But that's only if I was guessing.  :)

Hi Jim and Brian.

I'm IT guy so bandwidth and network possible bottlenecks was the first thing that I've check.

My files are not stored into a network server, My Mac is hooked up into Firewire external SSDHD drive, there's no "air" between the files/mac and the DAC.

I assume if this was the problem other bigger High-Hes (DSD, ISO) resolution files would appear with the same problem and they don't they play smooth.

This is only happening with 384Khz files.

MC Playback is set to Bitstream DSD, Output Encode NONE and Sample Rate are all set to No Change.

Try using MC's DSP Studio / Output Settings to convert the files that down't work to 192Khz.

192 doesn't work, Only if I set 88.2 and below it plays smooth but this is not the ideal, we're loosing resolution.

My Luxman DAC supports all these resolutions "USB input(PMC): 32k, 44.1k, 48k, 88.2k, 96k, 176.4k, 192k, 352.8k, 384kHz (16, 24, 32bit)"

I assume that with a high-end system I expect to get the highest possible quality.

Would be great if you could investigate more.

If I play DSD, ISO there's no buffering message.

I can provide you with sample file if you need.

Are you having the problem with the Luxman DAC or with another?

Sometimes a DAC doesn't play what its specifications say it will.

Bandwidth is also a possible problem.

I don't think you have a problem with MC here.

Could you please clarify what you mean "bandwidth" problem?

Yes, the problem is with with MC and Luxman.

I´ve tested with other DSF players and plays and it plays.

Bandwidth means that a critical component might not be fast enough.  Without re-reading, here are some possibilities.

Network
Connection to a drive
Connection to the DAC

and so on.

Another player may be converting.

Do you have music at other high resolution rates other than 384k ?  Like 24/96k or 24/192k?  It might be instructive to see if those rates are able to be played by this combination.  Because you have reported that MC fails to play while down converting 384 to 192 (or lower, down to a threshold of 88k), I wonder if a "native" file at any of those rates will play.

BTW, I don't think I've ever seen 384k PCM music for sale anywhere.  Are these custom recordings or ?

You mentioned DSF which is a format for DSD (1 bit) as far as I know.  Are you converting DSD to PCM using an external utility maybe?  The wording of your posts (very few words) makes it hard to figure out what formats you have successfully played and the details of what formats you have natively or otherwise.

Yes, I do have music in other resolutions and they play with no problem, even 24/192.

I´m not converting with external utility, The problem seems to be in particular playing DSF.

You can find a variety of musics with this resolution over the web.

My DAC shows the resolution that is playing at the display. www.luxman.com I don´t think if those files are playing properly on other players and shoing correctly at the DAC panel it´s converting.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but...

1.  DSF is a native DSD format.  This is 1 bit at 2.8 MHz or 5.6 MHz.
2.  384k is not a common music format at all.  As far as I know there are very few or zero commercial releases in this format.  A format called DXD is a PCM format that is used to *edit* DSD files in the studio.

If you have 384k files, you have PCM files, not DSD.  Again, as far as I know.

The options for dealing with DSD on JRiver are a little bit complex and I don't have any direct experience with them.  That is, if you are playing real 1 bit DSD files and not PCM files.

Hi, I'm having the same problem, but with music stored on a NAS (or on another Mac shared). Problem is: with other players such as Amarra the problem does not come up. This is becoming annoying because I cannot have a HD for each Mac. Given the problema appears only with JRiver, I assume that there should be an issue with it. By the way, on both my mac (an Imac and a MBP) it is not uncommon that JRiver crashes. I have the latest update.

How did you solve your problem?  I am having a problem with MC playing files to my OPPO Sonica DAC. It jumps when it first starts playing a song but once started it is fine. I think I set something I should not have.

MC has an option to "Play leading silence".  It's worth trying.

I am having similar problem with jriver mc28 in DSD64 buffering. I have tried same file in MusicBee and it plays without any issues.

Are you using DSD bitstreaming? If not, that's probably why.
